Inc.) QUESTION: What are the "three weeks?" ANSWER: The “three weeks” is the period between the fast of the 17th of Tammuz and the fast of the Ninth of Av, occurring this year between Thursday, July 7th and including Wednesday, July 20th. This period has been denot ed as a period of mounring for the people of Israel. QUESTION: Why are these three weeks observed in such a state of mourning? ANSWER: The fact that these three weeks lie in between two dates which were anniversaries of tragedy to our people has given them the connotation of being mournful events. On the 17th day of Tammuz the wall of Jerusalem was broken and the Ninth of Av the temple was finally destroyed. The commentaries like to draw this feeling from the statement in the Bible which tells of sorrow by saying “and the Almond-tree shall flourish.” (Ecclesiastes 12:5.) It takes three weeks for the Almond tree to produce its fruit from its blossom time. Some sources trace this three weeks of mourning to the three weeks in which Daniel mourned (Daniel 10:2). According to some, his mourning period was at this very same three weeks, according to others it took place in the spring. His mourning, how ever, did have something to do with the Temple in the sense that it is claimed by some that he mourned over the action of the Samaritans which were aimed to prevent the /rebuilding of the Temple. (Ezra 4:3) QUESTION: Why do some people refrain from drinking wine dur ing this period? ANSWER: The Talmud (Yerush almi, Pesachim) mentions the fact that the women observed a cus tom of not drinking wine during these three weeks. It could very well be that the prohibition a gainst wine was one in which it was sought to prohibit the people from making merry in this period of time. An interesting reason, however, combines the prohibi tion agdinst wine with that which prohibits the eating of meat for the three weeks, or at least for the last nine days of this three week period. One of the daily oc currences in the temple was the daily offering of morning and eve ning. An animal was offered and wine was poured out in addition to the meat of the animal. Since the three-week period is a means of mourning over the des truction of, the temple it is cus tomary to refrain from drinking the wine since wine would be used in enhancing the daily sac rifices of the temple.
