Unfortunately the State of Florida seems to have a long way
to go to achieve the degree of civilization which would preclude
people who sponsor hale programs and turn brother against brother.
Two separate incidences this
week illustrate how much more
“brotherhood” work is needed
throughout Florida.
In the town of North Miami,
just 20 minutes from the Jewish
populated city of Miami Beach, a
Jewish shoe store owner closed
his shop after anti-Semite arson
ists burned his little shop doing
$2,000 worth of d*.:n::ge. Anti-
Semitic sayings were scrawled on
mirrors in the front part of the j
store.
The owner, Max Ettelman, re
fused to expose himself to any
further actions of this kind and
sold out his interest and closed
the shop.
In Tallahassee, the capital- of
Florida, Bill Hendrix, for many
years the sparkplug of all KKK
activities in the state informed
stale officials that he was record
ing his name 0/1 the ballot for the
position of Governor in the 1956 j
election.
In this day and age Hendrix
says that he will campaign on the
slogan “dollars for segregation.”
It is obviously his plan to stir up
as much racial hatred as he can
using the recent Supreme Court
school non-segregation decision as
his weapon.
It may be hard to believe but
both of these things happened just
last week in the Stale of Florida.
The conservative congregations
of South Florida joined together
this week to observe “Torah Fel

Ben Gurion To
Form Coalition
Government
JERUSALEM, (JTA) Former
Premier David Ben Gurion set
out this week to form a coalition
of virtually all parties in the new
Israel Parliament except the
righlwing Herul Party and the
Communists. He acted under
mandate from President Itzhak
Ben Zvi to seek to form a cabinet
on the "broadest possible basis."
Mr. Ben Gurion himself, in an
interview with newsmen after
leaving President Ben Zvi’s of
fice, likened his objective to the
Provisional Government he set up
in 1948. He was to open formal
discussions with the leaders of
the various parties this week.
The veteran Map a i leader
stressed that he intended to build
a government adhering to a five
point program which he defined
as increase in imigration, particu
larly from North Africa; intensi
fication of colonization, particu
larly in the wastelands; integra
tion of the immigrants into Is
rael’s society; strengthening of
the state’s security arrangements,
and scrupulous observance of the
armistice agreements.
Herut Refuse to Confer
with President
Ben Gurion was given the man
date after President Ben Zvi
formally* completed consultations
with the leaders of all the parties.
The Herut Party, however, seeing
a slight to themselves in the ar
rangements for the reception of
their leaders by Mr. Ben Zvi, re
fused to send its leaders.
The Herut 'leaders found a
cause of offense in the fact that
the President had first called in
the representatives of the parties
in the present coalition, then all
others. The Herut said the invita
tions 'should have been extended
in an order based on the relative
strength of the parties in the new
Parliament, which would have
had it consulted immediately
after the Mapai.
Herut leader Menahem Beigun
charged that the Herut had been
“slighted” by the President and
had been “ill advised” in the
order of consultations. He reveal
ed that in reply to Herut’s writ
ten representations to the Presi
dent on this matter, the Presi
dent’s office had replied that: the
invitations were extended at the
President’s exclusive discretion;
the President viewed the consul
tations not merely as formalities
but as matters of practical signifi
cance—the consultations are de
signed to lead to the earliest for
mation of a stable government,
and the President meant no of
fense to anybody.

Dulles Seeks To Prevent Collapse
Os Israel-Egyptian Gaza Talks
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.
(JTA) Every effort to keep the
Gaza pacification talks from col

United Nations, as well as by the
Big Three powers—United States,
Britain and France.
This fact became evident here
as word reached United Nations
headquarters that Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles has
entered the picture. According to
information current in United
Nations circles, Mr. Dulles con
ferred last week with ranking
diplomats from both London and
Paris in an effort to work out
some plan for bringing Israel and
Egypt together through the talks
initiated by the United Nations
under the chairmanship of Maj.
Gen. E. L. M. Burns, chief of staff

ment between Israel and Egypt
! on the record before the General
Assembly convenes Sept. 20.
While little information is being
released officially here in regard
to the Gaza talks, there has been
a noticeable anxiety lest Gen.
, Burns’ efforts fail entirely. Cairo
dispatches of course blame Israel
foj: the lag. However, Gen. Burns
i is understood to have instructions
, to keep the talks going and, if he
cannot obtain agreement, on his
entire four-point program, he is
; to bring the two parties together
on some of these points.
From Jerusalem it was reported
that Israel and Jordan delegates
i met with a United Nations ob
server in no-man’s land there last
week to continue discussion of the
' proposed local commanders’
agreement. No information as to
the nature of the talks was avail
able. But UN headquarters said
the next meeting would be called
“in the near future” by the UN
chairman. •
