He spent sever el hours a day over his correspond 3nce. There is no doubt that many of the people who wrote to Einstein did sc simply to solicit a reply that would provide them with a collectors' item. One person, whose idsntily is unknown, is believed to have secured an even more valuable item than an original Einstein letter —an original Einstein speech, pari of it penned hours before he died. It was to have been delivered on a nationwide hook-up over three major television networks on April 26, and it was to be Einstein's participation in a tribute to the State of Israel on its seventh birth day. Einstein, who detested and shunned the limelight, readily agreed to the proposal that he should go before the television cameras as part of the Independ ence Day celebrations in this country. It was suggested to him that he should discuss Israel in Greetings and Best Wishes Palmetto Lunch GUS BAMVAKAS, Manager "Don't Play with Your Health" EAT IN A CLEAN PLACE 704 Buncombe Street Greenville, S. But Einstein had different ileas, and he expressed himself forthrightly in a letter replying to the suggestion that he be f eatured on television. "I should like very much to as sist our Israel cause under the prevailing difficult and dangerous circumstances," he wrote to the Israeli authorities. THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY 11 . ALBERT EINSTEIN would be little impressed by a speech about merely the cultural achisvemenls of Israel, of which the development of atomic energy for peaceful uses is only a special and relatively unimportant detail. I am saying this in consideration of the fact that Israel-Arab diffi cuulties are so much more in the public consciousnsss. It seems to me, therefore, that an evaluation of the political situation is neces sary to make any impression on public opinion. I even believe that a somewhat critical altitude con cerning the behavior of the world powers toward Israel and the Arab states would have a salutary effect. It is easier for me to say ihese things than for a person conneciad officially with organ ized Jewish life." Einstein noted that such a speech would have to be carefully prepared and ended, significantly, with the hope that the arrange ments for the television appear ance would proceed ‘‘without loss of precious time.” That letter was dated April 4, 1955. One week later, the Ambassador of Israel, vbba Eban, and the Consul of Israel, Reuven Dafni, went to see Professor Einstein at his home in Princeton. Einstein appeared in *ood spirits.
