THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY By Rabbi Samuel J. Fox (Copyright, 1956, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) QUESTION: What is the exact derivation of the name "Abra ham?" ANSWER: The Bible tells us (Genesis 17:5) that the name of the first Patriarch was changed from Abram to Abraham “for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee.” According to Rashi the name thus means “the father of a multitude of nations” and is somewhat of an abbrevia tion of this title, or at least of two of its words, “Ab” meaning father and “Hamon” meaning a multitude. The Iben Ezra Commentary re gards the name Abraham as a combination of two terms “Abir” meaning the strong one and “Hamon” meaning a multitude. One commentary is tempted to consider the name Abraham as a combination of three words: i.e., “Ab” meaning a father, “Ro’oh” meaning “he will see” or “he saw” and “Am” meaning a people. The total name would thus signify “a father (or a patriarch) who will see (or behold) a people.” The original name of the patri arch, Abram, is likewise subject to speculation. Some consider it a combination of two words, meaning “father” and “exalted.” According to this the original name meant an “exalted father.” Others consider it a combination of the words “father” and “Aram” thus meaning “the father who came from Aram.” *** * * QUESTION: Why does the Jew ish faith require one to pray three limes daily? ANSWER: Three different lines of reasoning for this are related in the Talmud. One states that there are three distinct changes evident to man during the day. In the morning there is a change from darkness to light. In the afternoon the vision of the sun Dependable Electric Service Pat Caruso, Owner Licensed electrician > Free Estimates PHONE EV 8-1137 ROUTE 5, BOX 471-B BEST WISHES • INSURANCE • REAL ESTATE • MORTGAGE LOANS • PROPERTY . i MANAGEMENT George Carlyon & Co. Man is asked to observe these three changes with prayer and medita tion. Another line of reasoning states that Abraham instituted the morning prayers, Isaac instituted the afternoon prayers and Jacob instituted the evening prayers. The Jew is asked to simulate the practices of his forefathers and thus he prays three times a day— once according to each patriarch. The third line of reasoning as sociates the three daily services with three functions in the an cient temple. There was a daily sacrifice in the morning, a daily sacrifice in the afternoon and the residue of the sacrifice kept burn ing on the altar at night. In pray ing three times a day the Jew thus emulates the practices of the offerings in the regular temple practice in days of old.
