he presented to his charges ... .
I am not yet sure how he did
it, but the magnificent house was
financed and built without a drive
or without borrowing money . . .
The modern domicile for the
Pilams is constructed in such a
way that cleaning and servicing
it is affected with the minimum of
effort . . .
I remembered the Dean from as
far back as twenty-five years ago
when “the boss” brought me down
to Gainesville to fraternity house
parties ... What continues to be
so amazing is the fact that the

busy advisor seems not to have
forgotten our boys or the dates
whom they later married, and
quite often comes up with little
annecdotes about ond or the other.
All these years, standing beside
him in his efforts for science and
humanity, has been his wife, Anne
. . . Mrs. Weil seems to extend
herself in the same ways . . . And
now that she is recuperating
from a recent illness she told me
that the Dean is helping her with
the project of erecting a sorority
house for "her girls." the Alpha
Epsilon Phi's . ..
There are other fraternities, so
rorities and Jewish organizations
on campus, and all of the students,
no matter to which they may be
affiliated, acknowledge the fact
that Joseph Weil is father confes
sor to them all . . .
If this seems a long way from
last Monday night, let me assure
you that it is not. Standing before
an audience which has heard the
best and sometimes remained un
moved, this humble man was able
to reassure a skeptical group that
those things which it held dear
was being enriched rather than
endangered in the Middle East. ..
He could do this because he him
self has exemplified all that is
best in the American-Judaic tra
dition . . .

Sam Arcus, recently appointed
Executive Director of the Jack
sonville Jewish Community Alli
ance, has taken up his duties in
new offices set up at the JCA at
8301 Ft. Caroline Road.
Mr. Arcus came to Jacksonville
from Houston, Texas, where he
was Program Director of The
Jewish Community Center for the
past three years. He had previous
ly held executive and social, work
posts in Albany, N. Y., Elizabeth,
N. J., and New York City. In ad
dition to publishing articles in
several professional social work
journals, Mr. Arcus has had wide
experience in camping, as a fam
ily counselor and social case
worker, and in Y.M.H.A.’s and
Jewish Community Centers. He
a B.S.S. degree from the
College of the City of New York,
and a M.S. degree from Columbia
University, New York School of
Social Work.
In Texas, Arcus played an ac
tive role with the Texas Social
Welfare Association and. with -the
Texas Chapter of the National
Association of Jewish Center
Workers, as well as being affili
ated with the National Associa-.
lion of Social Workers.
The new executive director of
the Jewish Community Alliance,
who will develop a leisure time,
recreational and social work pro
gram at the JCA for children and
adults, is 35 years old. He is mar
ried and has a. son Norman, nine
years old, and a year old
daughter, Shelly. The director and
his family are residing at 5452
Cresta Way in Arlington section.
