The Chanukah Spirit
BY MARTIN SILVER
With the exception of Passover, no holiday on the Jewish calen
dar perhaps exceeds Chanukah in inspirational value. The inspira
tion of the Maccabean story even crossed beyond the Jewish line. It
has become the theme of a great musical classic by Handel, and
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, America's never-to-be-forgotten poet,
used the theme for one of his great works. Among Jews this stimula
tion has been of course greater. The American Jewish poetess Emma
Lazarus, dreaming of the restoration of Israel in the pre-Herxl days,
wrote burning lines calling upon Jews to awaken to the Maccabean
heritage and, similarly, Herzl himself looked to that fountain.
In one of his most delightful
feulletons, Herzl tells of a Jew
who, tiring of the baitings of his
people, decides to return to his
own heritage, and the story of
this mental travelogue back to his
own is associated with the Men
orah, the very symbol of Chanu
kah. And when we pay tribute to
the valor of the generation of
today which made possible the
miracle of the restoration of Is
rael, we must bear in mind the
debt also due to the Maccabeans
of old, the inspiration of whose

courage has crossed the bound
aries of time.
Legends are usually woven
about the hero of a great episode,
but, oddly enough, there are few
about Judas Maccabeus. Almost
solitary is the one about his find
ing of a cruise of oil in the Tem
ple sufficient for only one day but
which, miraculously, sufficed for
a whole Week. This is a very small
miracle compared, let us say, to
such miracles as the splitting of
the Red Sea. The truth is perhaps
that there were no miracles in
the usual sense in the Chanukah
story. It was simply the valor of
the people which achieved the
triumph. If there was any miracle,
it was that so many owed so much
to so few, as Churchill said more
recently during the last world
war. Those who gathered about

the Maccabeans were the untrain
ed Jewish peasantry. The legions
of Antiochus were the Germans
of those days. They had the men
and the equipment, but what they
had not was the deep dedication
and the burning faith of the Mac
cabeans.
The anomaly of Chanukah as a
Jewish holiday is emphasized by
the fact that it is perhaps the lone
feastivity in remembrance of a
military victory. It was this, per
haps, which for some time was
responsible for Chanukah not se
curing its full and deserved status.
Passover records deliverance of
the Jews from bondage, but that
was not obtained through battle.
Purim scored another deliverance,
from Haman, but here too there
was no fighting involved. It was
the fortuitous changing of the
mood of a king by a pretty girl.
On the other hand, the deliver
ance symbolized by Chanukah
was obtained by the valor and
strength of a people.
It is this which has made Chan
ukah the holiday par excellence
of modern Israel. In Israel they
can understand the Maccabeans
of 2,000 years ago because some
thing of the same conditions pre
vail today. As in the days of old,
they are surrounded by foes who
outnumber them by twenty to
one, but not in the spirit which
is of the essence of Chanukah.
Essentially the Jewish genius
is for peace, and while Chanukah
remains a reservoir of valorous
inspiration in emergencies it has
in the main been transformed and
observed as a holiday marking not
so much a military victory as a
triumph of right against great
odds.
Chanukah is the best illustra
tion of the pacific character of
the Jewish people. None would
begrudge us if we rejoiced on this
occasion with a triumph in battle.
Instead we have transformed the
occasion into a festivity of the
spirit in its triumph over brute
force. We rejoice on Chanukah
not alone because our ancestors
emerged triumphant in battle, but
primarily because the result of
the struggle was a triumph for
the human spirit.
