FORT PIERCE ELECTS
BERNARD RUBIN MAYOR

Southern Jewish Weekly Staff Writer
Bernard Rubin became the first Jewish mayor in the history of
Fort Pierce following his election this month.
Rubin, member of the pioneer merchandising firm of Rubin
Bros., defeated B. F. (Jack) Ivey, automobile agency operator and
1946 mayor, by a vote of nearly 2 to 1—2,020 to 1,075.
Rubin was elected mayor-commissioner of the "Sunrise City" in
the annual municipal election held December 4. He took office
December 10.
Following the returns, Rubin in a post-election statement ex--
pressed appreciation of the support given him, pledging his best
efforts for the good of the community.

Anti-Semitism Reported
Increasing In Communist
Section of Germany
JERUSALEM, (JTA) Anti-
Semitism and anti-Semitic dis
turbances are increasing in East
Germany, according to an authori
tative report obtained here from
a refugee from the Communist
dominated section of Germany.
The report seems supported by
East German radio broadcasts,
monitored here, using rabidly
anti-S emi ti c phraseology and
blaming Jews in general for Is
rael’s action against Egypt in the
Sinai Peninsula.
The report brought here shows
that East Germany’s “People Po
lice” have refused to interfere
when vandals desecrated Jewish
cemeteries at Halle, Goerlitz and
Saalsfeld. The report also shows
that the East German regime is
adopting an anti-Semitic policy to
divert attention from increasing
economic difficulties and from in
creasing restlessness, aimed at the
regime, on the part of students
and workers.
