I enjoyed every moment of the
story . . .
The selling of this tale is in
ancient Israel when Solomon was
king, and his stables at Megiddo
housed the most beautiful horses
in the Middle East . . . This was
also a lime of turmoil when the
chief lieutenant, Jeroboam, plot
ted to overthrow Solomon with
the aid of the Egyptian, King
Shistak . . .
How Jeroboam’s treachery was
disclosed to the King, and how Is
rael was saved from her enemies
by Dan, a young soldier of the
King’s charioteers, is the story of
“King Solomon’s Horses” . . .
However, the central figure of the
tale is Bala, the horse, whose
emergence as a foal lost in the
woods changes the whole course
of Dan’s life, and finally leads
him to the arms of charming

it all! . . . We are staying at the Suez
Motel with Egyptian motifs in wallpaper,
carpets and tableware . . . Bui the man
agement is well aware of Jewish-Egyp
tian feelings at this time and above the
roof flies high the American flag ... All
is therefore good . . .
In harmony with the setting is my
choice of a book: “King Solomon’s
Horses” by Nora Benjamin Kubie, pub
lished by Harper Brothers (New York)
. . . This book is listed for “ten year olds
and up” ... I am slightly “up” . . . but
Dafne ...
Our family has eagerly awaited
the release of this book, for we
met its author several years ago
in Israel ... In "King Solomon's
Horses" Mrs. Kubie's love of the
land is revealed along with, her
familiarity of its landscape and its
history ... Her understanding and
love of horses is also displayed in

She, too, was unable to be on
hand . . .
This has happened so often
(here and elsewhere) that the

public is becoming a trifle annoy
ed .. . Why schedule people who
are so busy with the political
scene that they cannot keep pub
lically announced engagements?
If I may venture an opinion—
it is not quite cricket one way or
the other . . . The public loses
trust, and the speaker is strained
to make public appearances while
keeping close to the political
scene . . .
Israel has many fine ambassa
dors which it has not yet used for
American forums ... She has tal
ented and charming actresses and
performers who can speak with
skill and conviction . . .
Surely, a Golda Meir would not
be called away to speak to a Bond
Rally that cannot promise more
than $20,000 . . . Israel should
guard the strength of its states
men . . . There are other voices
which could be raised . . .
And incidentally, isn't it time
that the booming speeches of
Abba rtillel Silver be heard in the
land? . . . American Jewry needs
to be awakened from within once
again . . .

Speaking of awakening: we
were discussing the loose ends at
which modern youth seems to find
itself ... I remarked that young
people who have been brought up
with hobbies never become de
linquent . . . Many times, too,
these pastimes develop into ex
pressions which lead to eventual
livelihood and financial reward.
Having "King Solomon's Horses"
with me, I mentioned Nora Ben
jamip Kubie . . . Then someone
took us to see James Melton's
"Autorama" at Hypoluxo (eight
miles south of Palm Beach on
U. S. No. 1) ... With his wonder
ful display of automobiles from
the very conception of the ve
hicles and their manufacture, Mel
lon has an "American Room" . . .
This room has a mural dipiding
the history of our country from its
discovery by Columbus to the
building of our great cities follow
ing the earthquake in San Fran
cisco . . .
The entire time we spent at the
Autorama was a delight to all of
us ... To our ten-year-old son
the shiny, elaborate cars of other
eras was a revelation ... . The
American Room taught him
American history as he had never
seen it depicted before ... To us
old timers there was the same
keen interest . . .

What a panorama this trip to
Miami Beach has provided us . . .
Down here there is always some
thing you never "did" before . . .
