Thompson, a switchman recently discharged from the employment of the Chicago* ter minal transfer railway company, Yard master James S. Walsh of the com pany last rjUJht telephoned to /the police to remove the body, and then gave himself up. Thompson was discharged by Walsh for alleged neglect of duty. He had announced his intention, it is said, of killing Walsh, and loitered in the yards repeating the threat. When Walsh left the yards Thomp son followed him and after taunting him hurled a cobblestone. Walsh' drew p. revolver and fired, killing his as sailant. JOHN HILL INJURED NEAR TWO HARBORS TWO HARBORS, JWB 87— John Hill, a woodsman, attempted to get on a moving south bound ore train at Waldo this afternoon and slipped or missed his hand hold and fell and his left foot was severely crushed. He, was picked up and brought to Two 'Har bors on the ore train and taken to the Budd hospital, where it was found nec essary to amputate the foot just above the ankle joint. John Aho, who was with him, said that they had been working for the Red Cliff Lumber company near High land and quit and walked to Waldo, and they both tried to get on the train at jthe same time, but Aho escaped without injury. MUST PAY THEIR OWN FUNERAL EXPENSES WASHINGTON, June 27.—The comp troller of the treasury has rendered a decision in which he holds, in effect, that under the terms of its present contracts of employment between the Isthmian canal commission and its em ployes the commission is not author ized to pay the expenses of transpor tation of, the remains of deceased em ployes from the Isthmus to their homes in the United States. The comptroller is of the opinion, however, that the commission has authority if it so de sires to contract with its employes for the payment for such expenses as a part of their compensation in event of their death. WOMAN KILLS A 7 CLAIM JUMPER GOLDFTTTLD, Nev. June 27.—Mrs. Phoenix, the wife of a prominent Gold field real estate man who owns all the land between Galdfield and Columbia, has shot and probably fatally wound od Attorney Hayes of Goldfield. Hays had "jumped" a lot belong ing to the Phoenix addition and re fused to leave, claiming to have the legal right to remain. Mrs. Phoenix attempted to eject him and being un able to do so by physical force, pro cured a revolver and shot him. She then coolly walked down town and when arrested was eating Ice cream soda. Mrs. Phoenix was held without bail. MISSING LAWYER FINALLY LOCATED DES MOINES, June 27.—Virgil H. White, a well known Des Moines attor. ney, who disappeared two weeks ago, leaving an overturned canoe and por tions of clothing to indicate a possible drowning, has been located at Independ ence, IS miles west of here and poel tlvely identified as the missing man. White has been working on a farm and says he does not wish to return home. B. C. Hume, White's partner, says the young man is deranged. He will .prob ably return within a few days. TRAINS COLLIDE ONE MAN KILLED DENVER, Colo., June 27.—While climbing the steep grade into Castle Rock, Col., today, a heavily laden freight train going south broke in two sections and 33 cars rushed down the hill and crashed into the head of Col orado & Southern passenger train, de molishing the locomotive. Nearly all of the coaches of the passenger train were derailed and many passengers badly bruised, but none, -it Is reported, were fatally Injured. Prank Adams of Denver, fireman of the passenger train was killed. ALLEGED VICTIM OF ROBBERS ARRESTED BOSTON, June 27.—Henry W. Com stock, the mine operator, who recently reported to the police that he had been robbed of securities valued at $120,000, from a Fall River boat was held for the grand jury today, in the charge of larceny of two $1,000 bonds. Bail was fixed at $5,000. Mr. Comstock de clared that he would make no endea vor to secure bondsmen and he was committed to jail. M*rs. Cera Forth ingham of Atlantic, Massachusetts, is the complainant. DIES SUDDENLY WHILE DANCING I NEW YORK, June 27.—Surrounded I by groups of frightened men and wom*n, with the echo of dance music I still ringing in their ears, Mrs. Jas. Kirwin suddenly exprled in the ball room of the Ulmer park pavilion. The woman is 55 years old. She was attacked by apoplexy in the midst of a dance at an old fashioned barbe cue given by a church society. A priest hastened to her side and administered the last rites of the church. The tragic scene quickly put an end to the festivities. IS SENT TO JAIL FOR TELLING TRUTH BERLIN, June 27.—Herr Kunert, a Socialist Democrat of the Reichstag was sentenced to Halle today to three months' imprisonment for Insulting members of the German expedition sent to China in 1900 by saying in a campaign speech "Our soldiers in that desolated land plundered and abused women." A number of former sol diers of the expedition were examined and gave corroborative testimony in great detail. BIG CO-OPERATIVE COMPANY STARTS PORTLAND, Ore., June 27.—A co operative experiment of a magnitude hitherto untried is to be attempted in this state. The enterprise is known as the Co-operative Christian Federation, with a capital of $50,000. The objects of the federation hre to buy and sell land, build railroads, operate factories, mills and dairies in Oregon, to be owned and operated on the co-operative plan. ACTIONS AGAINST FOURTEEN ROADS KANSAS CITT, June 17.—Milton D. Purdy, assistant attorney- general ar rived here today from Washington to institute proceedings before United States District Judge Phillips against the 14 railway companies enjoined by the latter from giving rebates. Mr. Purdy stated that the bills against the roads had not been prepared by ihim and they would not be filed for several days yet. ____ RUN ON BANK ENDS. DUNKIRK, N. Y., June 27.—The run started yesterday on the Lake Shore National Bank of Dunkirk has sub sided.
