Paul answered, “Well, no, you are learning about me and I am learning about you.” We learn much from the simple words of children. This came to mind when I at tended the Temple Beth Israel Sis terhood tea where guests came from many churches in the Val-1 ley. It was a wonderful meeting and will be remembered as one of the finest inter-faith meetings of its kind. The gracious table was hostessed by Mmes. Rose Rosen berg and Emil Scult. Rabbi Plot kin and President Selma Mackoff offered warm, hospitable greetings and set the tone for an afternoon of knowledge and understanding. Mrs. Thelma Feller sang Hebrew melodies that were vibrant and meaningful and enthusiastically re ceived. The story of Chanukah and the significance of the Maccabean struggle was related by Mrs. Ruth Bank with honesty and charm and tied to life today in the fight for religious freedom. Many of the guests asked to see the sanctuary and were interest ed in learning as much as they could. I caught this comment as the meeting ended: “See, I told you that you would be glad you came.” We all were! * * ♦ Someone once noted that a Jew ish cookbook can be compared to a Jewish history, as many of the recipes are part of our observ ances and reveal the joy and hard ships such as matzo made without leavening and the potato latke or pancake which is said to have been hurriedly cooked by the wives of the Maccebean soldiers behind the lines while the men fought the Syrians for the return of their land. From a 60-year-old cookbook, Mrs. Simon Kander’s “Settlement Cook book,” I borrowed the recipe for potato pancakes: 6 raw grated potatoes, 3 whole eggs, a pinch of baking powder, 1 tea. salt, 2 tabl. flour, a little milk. Peel large potatoes and soak several hours or overnight in cold water, grate, drain and for every pint, allow 2 eggs, about 1 tabl. flour, % teas, salt, and a little pepper. Beat eggs well and mix with the rest of the ingredients. Drop by spoonfuls on a hot buttered spider in small cakes. Turn and brown on both sides. Or, bake in a hot oven in one pancake until crisp and brown, allow ing 15 min. for baking each side. Serve with applesauce. And as Harry Golden says. “Enjoy. Enjoy.” PHOENIX NOTES: Since my last letter we enjoyed a visit with my sister and brother-in-law, So phie and Iz Scheinberg of River head, N.Y., on their way home from Japan.
