The pbm sug gested by the library Board, and which was approved by council, is fine, but we believe it is impracticable. To build a library to be located m Palatka would mean that Palatka would have the entire benefit of it and other communities in the county would hardly subscribe to it. Palatka needs a suitable library building with up tj d;ite equipment and books. How; to get it is a problem vhich the withdrawal of the Oarnegie beneficiemces has complicated. The city hasn't the money wilth which to build it and there are probably few Who would favor bond ing for it when so many other things are needed A memorial to the world war veterans is an imme diate need, taxing the appreciative spirilt of our people, if the library is too big a task to undertake under an emergency why not devise some other permanent form to "perpetuate the memory of our boys? The Confederate Veterans at their annual reunion held in Atlanta, many camps in Florida, the United Daughters of tihe Confederacy .recently held in Tampa, the American Lee-ion. the Florida State Press Association and any num. ber of church association; and any number of church or ganizations, have all passed resolutions urging the ratifi cation of the treaty of peace and league of nations cove nnt, and no organization of any charcter im this state that I know anything about has adopted adverse resolutions. "Very truly, FRANK HARRIS. NO COMPROMISE, SAYS LODGE Senator Lodge says that there is no possibility of a further compromise on the Peace Treaty. He intimates that the peace treaty will be carried to the people. While we cannot understand how Mr. Lodge proposes to do this as a specific issue, we do know that whether Mr. Lodge, tr any other malcontent, wishes it or not, tlie people, of this nation will express themselves on this question at the first opportunity afforded at the polls. Any man who says there is no possibility of a com promise, no matter what the proposition is, sets himself t li j, :n j up as a narrow Digot, umvoi-wiy vi cwuamwittuuii mu sub mits his judgment and opinions to scorn of all fair minded men. While hler two little daughters clung to her skirts, Mrs. Lapara today renounced any intention to accept the offer. "If I took the money, it would only bring me unhappiness," she said. "Every dollar would remind me of my husband's death on the gallows. My husband was a good man. He was not guilty of murder. He was a good husband, and I will die at my work before I will profit by his death." Efforts are being made to procure a pardon for Lapara. Referring to Savannah's experience with carnivals The Morning News of that city says it believes it ex j.resses the sentiment of nine-tenths of the people of Sa vannah when it says th;it carnivals "do Savannah no good, even though they are brought here to aid good causes. There has been enough evidence to prove that a good cause in need of money can get it in Savannah without the need of such practices as carnivals almost invariably follow. There can be do doubt that many men who are permitted to ganib'e at carnivals to their hearts' content will find it difficult to understand why they cannot do a little gambling the day after the carnival leaves. Some men ought to feel honored for the enemies they make. President Wilson is one who ought to feel so honored. One of his most implacable enemies is Victor L. Bei er, recently driven from his seat in congress with only one dissenting vote. It was not the government of the United States to which he admitted he was disloyal While the was was in l.rogre.ss, but in the way in which it was administered by Woodrow Wilson, The following is one of the ways in which Bergcr ex pressed his disloyalty: "Women soliciting for such a purpose that is, en couraging young men to enlist are only a step higher than women who solicit for the sale of their bodies." This slander upon the noble womanhood of America was properly and promptly rebuked by driving Berge nom his seat in the house of representatives to which lie nad been elected by the enemies of our government. But nothing is done to Penrose who is equally disloy al to the executive of the nation. See comments else where. He ought to be bound, gagged and also driven forth o consort with Berger ami his kind.
