Movie Revues “TORRID ZONE” MARKS PROGRAM AT CAROLINA Probably the fastest, funniest comedy-drama that Hollywood has given out with this year is “Torrid Zone.” Triple-starred with James Cagney, Ann Sheridan and Pat O’ Brien, the new picture at the Carolina rings the bell with every line of its swiftpaced dialogue. The triple-threat star trio makes a dynamic combination. Whether Cagney is making love to Miss Sheridan, or fighting with O’Brien, lie is indomitable. As for Miss Sheridan, she is exuberantly lovely whether she is cheating the natives at cards, singing the tuneful new song “Mi Cabellero” in a cafe, or using her justifiably famous “oomph” to ensnare Cagney, or brawling with O’Brien. The cast is uniformly excellent. Supporting the three stars are Andy Devine, who gives one of his most inspired comedy charac terizations in the role of Cagney’s pal and Helen Vinson, who plays the “other woman” with devastat ing charm. Director William Keighley has done a brilliant job of main taining the foreign, tropical at mosphere as a background for the lively blend of comedy, ro mance and action, in the original screenplay written by Richard Ma caulay and Jerry Wald. March of Time’s story of the U. S. Phillipine problem as an added co-feature is an excellent exposition of the subject. The News Reel completes the bill. 2 “HIDDEN GOLD” MARKS ROYAL THEATRE BILL A stage coach that carried the wealth of the nation Eastward in the old Wells Fargo days is back at work again on the screen of the Royal Theatre, where the new “Hopalong” Cassidy drama, “Hid den Gold” is currently playing. Long out of service, the stage coach seen in “Hidden Gold” was reconditioned for the film, and is seen in several of the fast action sequences. The coach is an important prop erty of the new picture, whose plot deals with gold-mining gangsters in the froniter-busting days. Wil liam Boyd, who heads the cast of “Hidden Gold,” rides shotgun on the coach. Others in the featured cast are Russell Hayden, Minor Watson, Ruth Rogers, Britt Wbod and Ethel Wales. Latest news, the current chapter of “The Shadow,” Taint Legal,” A Kennedy comedy, are also on the program. 2 The production charts for July, 1940, a typical 1940 working month, of one of the prominent U. S. Ameri can plane manufacturers, plan for a total of 138,000 working hours. Of this total only 43,000 hours will be directed toward military aircraft. PAROLES GRANTED TO FIVE CONVICTS John H. Junious, Of New Han over County, Among Men Freed By Gov. Hoey RALEIGH, June 20—UP—Ruben Hicks, sentenced in Craven county in December, 1935, to 10 years for breaking and entering, was among five prisoners paroled today by Governor Hoey. Also freed were: John Smith, sentenced in April 1939, in Wayne to three to five years for manslaughter; John Hen ry Junious, sentenced last March in New Hanover to eight months for carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon; Clyde Millsaps, sentenced in July, 1939, in Gaston to two years for assault with a deadly weapon; and John W. Honeycutt, sentenced last November in Rowan to 18 months for assault with a deadly weapon. Eight Enlisted Here For Service In Navy Eight additional first enlistments as apprentice seamen from South eastern North Carovna were re ported yesterday at the Wilmington district office of the naval recruit ing service. They included: William L. Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wood, of route one, Burgaw; James P. Padgett, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Padgett, of route two, Leland; Carl C. Gross, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Gross, of Delco; Roscoe S. Porter, son of Mrs. C. M. Porter, of route two, Kelly. Lloyd G. Shepherd, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Shepherd, of route two. Chadbourn: John H. Foy, son of Mrs. Eva L. Foy, of 402 Church street; James E. Wells, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Wells, of 320 Mer cer avenue; and Robert L. Hart, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Hart, of 315 Dawson street. They were transferred to the naval training station base at Hampton roads, Va., for eight weeks of preliminary training prior to assignment to duty with various ships of the U.S. fleet. F. L. Williams, local recruiting officer, said men enlisting in the na /y at this time are offered great er opportunities than ever before in trade training, travel, complet ion of education, and promotions. 3 PLANE SABOTAGE HELSINKI, Finland, June 20—(.41 —The cofusion that an “instru ment foreign” to its mechanism caused a plane crash of June 14 in which Henry W. Anthiel, Jr., of Trenton, N. J., an attache of the American legation in Helsinki, was killed—was announced today by an official, investigating committee. The implication thus was that some sort of sabotage—possibly a time oomb—had been responsible. 1 CLASSIFIED DISPLAY $7.50 Hundred Now is the best time of the year to start chicks: easier raised (needing little or no brooding) they grow fast making profitable fryers in two months.
