Lewis in a Labor Day speech today de nounced the circulation of what he called a "vicious falsehood” ac cusing American labor—as French workers were accused before the fall of France—of delaying nation al defense preparations. At the same time he renewed his outspoken opposition to peace time conscription, demanded a greater voice for labor in defense counsels and called for use of idle men and machinery to raise the national income by $25,000,000,003 annually. Lewis blamed "men in high places in the nation” as circula tors of the "vicious falsehood” about labor. They do not want labor, he said, to participate in the defense program because they know labor will oppose their "ef forts to pervert the idea of nation al defense to the services of pri vate greed.” , A 139 Radio and Repairs SHACKELFORD'S RAI>XJ~SERV. ice. Government bonds rose to around the best prices since the war started last September. The war loan 3 l-2s added as much as 1-4 point at one time, although late trading saw the advance pared. Textile and tobacco issues were favored and coppers closed higher. The last apparently benefitted by rumors the government made a deal with Rhodesian copper pro ducers to extend an agreement to take substantial tonnages for an other year. Oils moved ahead over a broad front but industrial leaders were spotted with losses. Rubber shares were evenly maintained. A cheering item to the market was the annual report of Wardle & Davenport, silk and hosiery manu facturers, who announced the best year since 1929-30. EASTERN STATES SWEPT BY FLOODS Suffering And Threat Of Dis ease Face Southwestern New Jersey, Delaware CAMDEN, N. J„ Sept. 2.—(fl— Suffering and the threat of disease were the chief concern of public officials and relief agencies to night in scores of communities stricken by destructive floods which cost at least five lives in southwestern New Jersey and Delaware. As the floodwaters from yester day’s torrential downpour receded, Eugene L. Horan, head of the Red Cross in Gloucester county, asked New Jersey health authorities for medical supplies to prevent ty phoid fever. Water was rationed in Woodbury, Gloucester county seat, where the pumping station was flooded. Many Hammonton residents ate cold meals because the .flood reached the Glassboro gas plant. Gas ser vice also was curtailed in Woods town, Pedricktown and Penns grove. Residents in the five-county Jer sey area affected by the flood were warned to boil water contanimated by flood seepage. Albert C. Jones, director of Bur lington county board of chosen freeholders, said 200 square miles in New Jersey was inundated. He estimated property damage in Bur lington county at $2,500,000. Dama age was about $1,000,000 in Cam den county. Demonstrations Staged In Many Yugoslav Cities BELGRADE, Sept. 2.—UP)—Hun dreds of persons demonstrated in Belgrade, Zagreb, Dubrovnik and other Yugoslav cities today fol lowing increases in food prices.
