"Yes,” he remarked, when Gun paused. "As a matter of fact, thal DOES interest me, very much! What have you done about it?” "I realized that, naturally, this might not be up our street at all, and should in the ordinary way be a matter for the Special Branch at the Yard. MURRAY O. JAMES, Trustee. This 22nd day of October, 1940. WASHINGTON, Oct. 23— (JPI — ■Members of the National Guard as sociation, many of them bound for a year’s active duty, heard Maj. Gen. Edward Martin, their new president, declare today “there is only no objective for any dictator—and that is the United States." Addressing the delegates immedi ately after his election, Martin, who is also adjutant general of Pennsyl vania, declared the present emer gency made it necessary for this country’s citizen-soldiery to "attain even greater heights than ever be fore." “There is only one objective for any diciator,’’ he said, “and that is the United States. I don’t know what’s in store for us. It may be training and it may be a great cam paign.” He declared the national guard must be better fit physically than at any time and “be prepared to sacrifice more time to military af fairs than heretofore.” Shortly before winding up its three-day convention, the guard passed a resolution complaining that some media of public information had published "so-called special articles based on hearsay and spec ulation which destroy the confidence of the American people in the armed .service, ar.d consciously or uncon sciously, sabotage the program." Flynn Declares Hanes Is ‘Willkieities’ Victim NEW YORK, Oct. 23—GP>—Na tional Democratic Chairman Ed ward J. Flynn said today that John W. Hanes, former under-sec retary of the treasury, “has evi dently become infected with Will kieitis—that strange disease which impels republicans to face both ways at once.’’ He made the comment in a state ment continuing the dispute over alleged solicitation of government employes for campaign funds. Flynh had charged that fund-ap pealing letters signed by Hanes and Lewis W. Douglas, both of whom once held posts in the Roose velt administration but who are now working for Willkie, had gone to federal workers in violation of the law. Hanes yesterday denied the | charge, asserting the letters car ried wording that no contributions would be accepted from persons working for the government. He counter-charged that Flynn had been “caught in his attempts to violate the Hatch act” in a letter Flynn sent to campaign workers. Chinese Launch Drive On Japs In Chekiang HONGKONG, Oct. 24— (Thurs day) —l/P)—A large Chinese army has launched a powerful offensive against the Japanese in Chekiang province and pushed northward after crossing the Chientang river, the Central News agency (Shi nese) reported today. Several points north of the river held by small Japanese garrisons w'ere captured, the agency said. It described this drive as part of a sudden revival of fighting on many fronts.
