CHRISTMAS TALK
Bishop Darst Tells Club
War 'Cannot Hide
The Star*
Bishop Thomas C. Darst, address
ing the Rotary club yesterday, said
that In his diocesan travels he has
met many people who tell him they
cannot get into the true Christmas
spirit this year. With so much war,
so much sorrow and suffering, such
great crimes being committed against
civilization, they don’t know where
to turn or what to look for; yet, he
said, for his part, he has never been
through a holiday season containing
more hope.
He compared the present world
with that of the beginning of the
Christian era. Then, as now, the
little countries had been swallowed
by a great dictator state and whole
peoples 'cried in their anguish for
succor. Then there came the star in
the east, guiding the shepherds to
Bethlehem, and the dawn of a new
era.
“The smoke of battle cannot hide
the star,” said Bishop Darst. “It
shines for the world today—it is
eternal. There was a great differ
ence between the manger behind the
inn in Bethlehem and mighty Cae
sar’s throne in Rome. But it was
the manger that survived, the throne
that fell. For us, it will be Jesus,
not Hitler. That is what Christmas
1940 means to me.”
Following the bishop’s#address the
club s. ig two carols and was dis
missed. Visitors were Bill Sutherland
and E. E. Kilbrun.
G. S. Viereck Resigns
Press Club Membership
NEW YORK, Dec. 24. — CP*
George Sylvester Viereck, author,
has resigned from the Overseas Press
Club of America—at the request,
said the organization’s secretary, of
the members.
Viereck, in disclosing his resigna
tion, said the demand was “merely
. .... „__ MWk
another phase of the same i iass
hysteria which blinds men’s eyes at
a lynching bee and makes them do
things for which they are ashamed
after it is all over.”
Burnet Hershey, executive secre
tary of the club—a group of men
who have served as foreign corres
pondents—said “all kinds of gesta
pos and bundists used to attend our
meetings with him. Finally the
members simply demanded that he
resign.”
Early this year, Rep. Patman (D
Texas) accused Viereck of being one
of the “real brain trust of Nazi
propaganda in America,” an accusa
tion Viereck met with the assertion
that he was “neither its brains nor
any other portion of its anatomy. ’
