Chico, one-year-old mischief box, belongs to Danny Hartley and lives at 209 Walnut street. Chico falls in the official cate gory of Spider monkey, a tame variety prevalent in northern South America, and when full grown, his entire coat will have a yellow tint. Now the golden-green color is mostly scattered along his arms below the elbow and ' nvn his back. Six months ago Danny’s brother sailing on the S. S. Northern Sword from South America brought the tiny monkey to Danny. In Par amaibo he bought him from a na tive selling them on the streets. Now the brother is a sailor on the Esso Houston plying the waters from New York to B; /town and Houston. Should you see Danny in a down town store with an odd little toy monkey perched on his shoulder or his arm, don’t be a bit sur prised to see the bundle of fur come alive and blink his bright black beady eyes at you. Usually when he goes out with Danny, he perches very inconspicuously on his shoulder or near his hand, and remains rigidly still while Danny is busy with groceries for his mother or playtoys. However if you do recognize Chico as being real, and ask Danny about him, you’re in for a treat. "Speak to the lady,’’ Danny will say to the bright-eyed fellow, and Chico will lean your way, still clutching to Danny’s arm, and make a queer jabber-jrbbr sound. Quite delighted, you’ll probably compliment him, and Danny will say to the monkey: "Now whisper in my ear what the lady said to you,” and up his arm the little monk will climb, take his ear in one tiny paw, and jabber-jabber in a low voice directly in the ear. That is Chico performing. At home he’s the same type of fel low although a bit mischievous. His abode is a bird cage hanging in the kitchen—but he’s rarely there. The entire house is his play ground, the curtains his adders to speed up and make f-ces at any pursurer, the chairs a jumping stand to the next table,' the pic tures made to cling to. With a two-inch head, a seven inch body, and tail 12 inches long, the little fellow makes quite a picture dangling from every in» jginable object. He is fond of Dan iy and follows him : irwise as hj prosses the room. He seems mo6t rappy when Danny plays with him, and quite gleefully climbs his owq tail when Danny holds it by the tip. Then he does a back fV-i from Danny’s hand and lands on Ins tee t. Danny is in the Sixth grade at school. His dog comes in for his share of the fun too, for he and Dhico are great playmates. Chico rides his back holding on to his pollar. They tumble playfully on the floor, and wher the family s<oes of leaving them both loose in the house, often Chico and the fog are sleeping side by side on the foot of the bed when they return. The sugar bowl is his weakness. Hide it where they may, Chico hunts until he discovers it. The day I was there, the sugar bowl had been left on the table since Chico was supposedly safely shut up in the bird ct'ge. Of course, when Danny turned him out, he went directly for the sugar. Danny scolded him, and Chico took to the curtains. By the time Danny turned his back, the little paws were dipping in the sugar again and hastily going to his mouth while his bright eyes were slyly watching his mas ter’s movements. Danny shooed him off again, and since, at the time he was busy looking for a picture of his brother, hid the sugar dish in the folds of the table cloth. By the time we could look for Chico again, all visible monkey was a long curling tail protruding from the table cloth folds. The sugar bowl ' as res cued again, this time to be safe ly put in a cupboard. Chico likes rubber, too. Danny’s brother also brought everal rub ber ornaments from Cmth Amer ica including an Indian caroe with skillfully molded Indiam rowing the boat. Chico takes great de light in pulling the smal' rubber feathers from their headresses and chewing them. Danny says pretty soon those Indians won't be wear ing feathers. Probably the nicest thing about Chico is his 4 iendliness. Far re moved from the biting and scratch ing variety, he nonchalantly sits in your hand, or on your head, as the notion suits him. Or he’ll shake hands with you with the tiny paw just large enough to encircle one finger. Danny’s got something there! Quiz Program Held At Rotary Luncheon Rabbi M. M. Thurman, January program chairman of the Rotary club, yesterday announced that George Sokolsky will address the club at next week's meeting. Sokolsky, who is on the Community Forum program next Tuesday night, is to arrive in Wilmington in time to dis cuss the major events of the day before the club, and President Elvie White has urged every member to attend. The program yesterday, directed by Bernard Solomon, was a quiz of the members largely on the history and current situation of Wilmington and its environs. Honors went to Dr. Houston Moore, who not only knew the date of Wilmington’s incorpo ration, but “slipped” correct answers to his table neighbors. It was the concensus that many present need to brush up a bit on their home town's history. Visitors were Emil Bernstocker of Goldsboro, and N. E. Drexler, new president of the Tide Water Power company. American Citizen Held In German Prison Camp BERLIN, Jan. 7.—(IP)—Captain Charles Davis Morgan, an Ameri can citizen who was a Harvard university chum of President , Roosevelt, is in a German prison camp with little chance of release. He was captured last June while fighting with the British in the battle of Flanders. His plight was disclosed today by the United States embassy. The 56-year-old attorney-soldier is the husband of the former \ Louise Warfield of Baltimore, a ' cousin of the Duchess of Windsor. Embassy sources said friends - bad carried his case to the White . House, but under international law ‘ lie is considered a British soldier 1 because he took part in combat as such. His predicament thus is distinguished from that of Ameri can ambulance drivers—noncom- c batants—who already have been \ released. 3 1 JOHNSON IS SAVED FROM GAS HOUSE Robeson County Negro’s Death Sentence Commuted To Life Imprisonment RALEIGH, Jan. 7.—UR—Gov ernor Hoey, in his last action on a capital case before he leaves of fice Thursday, today commuted to life imprisonment the deathsen tence imposed on George A. John son, negro, in Robeson county for first degree burglary. Johnson, who was to die Friday, was convicted of entering the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cur rie in Pembroke last July. The Governor quoted from re commendations of clemency by all the jurors, Sheirff E. Clyde Wade of Robeson county, Trial Judge J. Paul Frizzelle and Trial Solicitor F. Ertel Carlyle. The jurors said that upon being advised by the judge that they could not return a verdict of guilty of second degree burglary, they “reluctantly” convicted the negro of the capital offense. Judge Frizzelle said circum stances “clearly indicated” that Johnson “was under the influence if intoxicants, though not irrespon iibly drunk, and in addition . . . ipparently possesses a low order >f mentality. Governor Hoey said the record ;howed that Johnson did no serious njury to anyone when he entered he Curie home.
