CAB DRIVER GETS THEFT SENTENCE Convicted Of Larceny Of Money From Passenger; Given Twelve Months L. F. Hogain. driver for the Coastal Cab company, was sen tenced to 1? months on the roads by Recorder H. Winfield Smith Wednesday morning after Hogain had been found guilty of the theft of $41 from a woman passenger in the cab early last Wednesday morning. Hogain pleaded not guilty to the charge and, immediately after he was sentenced, gave notice of ap peal to superior court. Recorder Smith set bond at $300. Mrs. Arthur Wilcojt of Panama City, Fla., testified that she engag ed Hogain to drive her to the Pines, Brunswick county roadside estab lishment, after she had arrived at the bus terminal here around 3 a. m. last Wednesday. After Ho gain had returned her to the bus station, she said, she found that the change purse of her pocket book. containing S41. had been stolen Testifying for the state, Police Lieutenant O. V. Thompson and W. L>. Thompson, city detective, de clared that Hogain had been ar rested on Mrs. Wilcox’s complaint, and the detective said that when he searched Hogain, lie found $14 in his wallet and a larger sum of money concealed in a l-.oney belt. Hogain. the detective said, then proffered him $41 which he said he would give Mrs. Wilcox to drop L11C I I 1 d LIC1 • The taxi driver, placed on the stand by his attorney. Alton A. Lennon, told the court that he had first been approached by Mrs. Wilcox who asked hi- i if he knew where she could buy a cup of cof fee. Mrs. Wilcox, he said, did1 not leave the cab and he returned! her to the hits station after she had taken several drinks. Mack of Seat tle, wrote Governor Broughton that she heard Berry talking over the Japanese radio on De cember 11, that he said he was alive and well and wanted any one hearing to relay the mes sage to his family. Static interfered, however, when he gave the name of the town in North Carolina, Mrs. Mack said she was unable to recognize it. But she sent the message to the Governor any way. Broughton gave out the story today and said, “I certainly hope the parents get the mes sage.” -V Former Wilmingtonians Husband Killed In Plane Crash In Alaskan Sector Lieutenant William M. Hender son. of New York City, was killed in a plane accident in Alaska re cently, according to an announce ment by the Adjutant General’s office Thursday morning. Lieutenant Henderson was mar ried to Miss Nancy Wallace, daughter of the late O. T. and Mrs. Wallace, at the Church of the Covenant here on August 9. He was called to active duty im mediately afterwards, and after spending three weeks in Seattle, Washington, was sent to Alaska. As a civilian, Lieutenant Hen derson was a professor at Colum bia university and active in wel fare service work in New York city. S. Hodgkinson was assigned tonight to a frontline fighter squadron by the Air Ministry. He lost his legs three years ago in a crash while blind flying. His determination to fly again finally won out and he was fitted with special steel legs and returned to the fleet arm. After flying with the fleet several months, the Ad miralty granted his request t transfer to the RAF.
