Destruction of a German submar
ine in the Caribbean was dis
closed by the Navy today in an
nouncing award of the Distinguish
ed Flying Cross to Lt. Gordan R.
Fiss, Virginia Beach, Va.
The Navy reported that Fiss,
piloting a patrol bomber, sighted
the submarine while protecting a
convoy “several months ago.”
The submarine was approaching
the convoy from the rear, and
Fiss “immediately put his plane
into a dive and dropped down on
the U-boat,” the Navy said.
“The submarine attempted to
crash dive, but so swift was Lieu
tenant Fiss’ attack that only her
bow was awash as he released
his depth charges.
“The charges severely damag
ed the U-boat, making it impos
sible for her to submerge, and
she was destroyed thereafter by
gunfire from surface vessels ac
companying the convoy.”
Navy spokesman said the sink
ing of this submarine had not
been reported in any previous an
nouncement.
TOLL NOW AT 659 SHIPS

Anouncement last week of the
sinking of three United States me
dium-sized merchant vessels and
the 9,300-ton Edifots, a Greek
freighter, raised to 659 the As
sociated Press total of announced
Allied and neutral merchant losses
in the Western Atlantic since Pearl
Harbor.
The three U. S. losses brought
to 266 the announced American
merchant sinkings in those waters.
Loss of life was comparatively
low. Only six of the 209 crewmen
aboard the three vessels were lost.
The loss of the Edifots was
Greece’s 11th announced Western
Atlantic sinking. Eighteen surviv
ed and 19 are missing.
