Approximately three miles of 30 inch steel reinforced concrete piy 3 lias been installed, and each daj additional pipe is being laid. A right-of-way 30 feet wide is being cleared m the process of extending lhe waterline from ihe present pumping station at Toomer’s Creek to the new temporary pump ing station on Hood's creek. The Hood’s creek section is the first step in the project eventually destined to extend to a point on the Cape Fear river above U. S. Hock and Dam No. 1 in Bladen county, thus eliminating the possi bility of salt infiltrating the mu nicipal water supply. The tempo rary section will place the source of water some 11 miles further up the Cape Fear than it is now. From the site where the pipe is now in the ground the pipeline will be carried back to the Cape Fear river on a trestle over the low ground. Seven hundred and eight lineal feet of 30-inch flexible joint cast iron pipe will carry the pipeline under the river in a trench on the river bed above Navassa, and the concrete pipe will go the remaining distance to the Toomer’s creek pumping station. Fifteen million gallons of water per day, three times the present consumption, will be the capacity of the new waterline, while the capacity of the new and old water purification plants is 12 million gallons per day In a most interesting process to the amateur eve, but in monotonous succession +o the experienced worker, one joint of the great pipe is laid at a time, 1,250 feet in one day being the greatest day’s w’ork to date, according to the foreman under whose watchful eye the men work. However, 600 feet of pipe laid in one day is an average day’s STRAW HATS and BATHING SUITS GIBSON’S HABERDASHERY North Front Street SEE DR. KAMER AND SEE BETTER Eyes Examined Glasses Fitted DR. W. A. DIAL 5317 FARRAR TRANSFER & STORAGE WAREHOUSE work under normal conditions, it was learned. Inclement weather, difficulties in the boggy river marshes and in clearing the right-of-way in the seriei of bays and pine savannahs have slotved up the process to some extent, although the work is now progressing rapidly, as evi denced by tne tour. The 16 foot sections of the spe cial type of concrete pipe, con sisting of a welded steel inner jack et, cage steel reinforcing and a concrete exterior, are being brought to the right-of-way from the Lock Joint Pipe company’s temporary plant at Navassa. There the pipe company, cf Am pere, N. J., is manufacturing the necessary pipe sections in rapid succession, various stages of the pipe’s formation being in evidence drily at the small; but complete, war-time plant. Clearing the right-of-way, digging the tranches for the sections of pipe and laving the pipe is the work of the Price Brothers com pany of Dayt-.n, O., and the work is under the direct supervision of William C. Olsen, of Raleigh, who is consulting engineer for the Fed eral Works Agency. Supervising engineer in charge of the entice project is C. F. Churchill, local representative for the Federal Works Agency, of Richmond, Va. During the inspection, a great power shovel swung a 'Section of p;pe from the side of the right-of way into the trench which had been prepared for it, and the sec tion was expertly fitted together by a patented process. One intricate part of the process cf laying ea :h section of pipe is the cementing together of each sec tion by a man heavily-clothed and rubber-booted who entered the 16 foot, 30-inch pipe to apply cement of a mud-like consistency to the joint. The same big power shovel which swung the section of pipe off the ground and into its trench, also serves fox excavating for the project, transnorting huge bites of earth from the trenches to the side of the right-of-way and then returning the deposits later to cov er the sections of pipe which have been swung into position. Assisting in the process of clear ing the right-of-way and burying the large sections of pipe was a huge bull-dozer, manned by a chub by workman who maneuvered the large piece of machinery with seemingly’ as little effort as a sol dier would manipulate a jeep. Extending west from Hilton, the new waterine runs parallel with the Seaboard Railroad from Na vassa to Hood’s creek. Although only 10 miles by pipe line, from one end of 'he waterline to the other is 15 miles over dusty wash hoard roads, through sand hills and pine savannahs. The cost cr the waterline to Hood’s Creek will amount to $586, 270, according to city officials. This includes 46,350 lineal feet of 30 inch reinforced concrete pipe, 2,659 lineal feet cf 30-inh reinforced concrete pipe on pile bents and piers, 708 lineal feet of 30-inch fexible joint cast-iron pipe to go under the Cape Fear river, and ether such items. A cost of $100,000 has been esti mated for the new temporary pump ir.g station at Hood’s creek. •\T Joseph Israel Listed As Missing In Service Joseph Israel, son of Charlie Is rael of 705 Kidder street, Wil-, mihgton, is listed as missing in the service of the United States Navy, according to a Navy de partment announcement Saturday.
