Sept. 30. —Iff—1The hog market held steady with Wed jnesday's averages at the outset today, but declined later 10 to 15 cents. The top reached early was $15.10. Steer trale was slow, 25 cents lower. Top was $16.75. Spring lambs were 15 cents higher at $13.75. Choice 190 to 330 pound hogs brought $14.80 to $14.95 which was 10 to 15 cents under opening fig ures. Sows were 10 to 15 cents lower, good and choice 300 to 500 pounders selling for $14.25 to $14.75. Large packers bought 6.000 head direct in addition to the 11.000 re ceived here. Shippers took 1.000. Trade on steers was slow with only a few loads of choice quality selling steady. The bulk sold at $13,000 to $15.50. Ensign Harrell, who served as a pharmacist mate for 14 months be fore being commissioned, was for eight years manager of Harrell’s Funeral home here. The young of ficer’s sister, Lieut. Maritime Service Training station in St.; Petersburg, Fla. Shaw attended N e w Hanover SHAW High school and Wake Forest college. Prior to his enrollment he was engaged in war work at the North Carolina Ship building company. Seaman Shaw is now in his pre liminary period of training and hopes to enter the U. S. Maritime Service Army Transport Cadet school where he will be trained either as a junior deck or engine officer. On completion of this train ing he will be sent out with a com mission in the Army Transport Service. RETURNS TO BASE Murray Lanier, aviation ordin ance mate, first, class, son of Brant ley Lanier and the late Mrs. Bon nie Lanier of Wallace and Burgaw, has recently returned to his new base in Seattle, Wash., after a short leave spent with his family in Burgaw. Lanier joined the Navy June 22, 1941 and received his boot train ing in Norfolk, Va. For the past year he has been on active duty in the Southwest Pacific where he participated in four major air bat tles. and was awarded a cam paign bar with four stars attach ed. Maffitt Village, and James Wendell Guthrie, Route one, were named custodian and assistant custodian of the county courthouse, respec tively, in a special session of the board of county commissioners Wednesday afternoon to succeed Edward D. George, custodian, and his assistant, L. M. Rich, who were retired from service Thurs day. Mr. George and Mr. Rich be came the first persons to be cover ed by the new county retirement system. Addison Hewlett, Sr., chairman of the county board of commissioners revealed Thursday. The former custodian began his service early in the century, left the post to join the city police force, and came back to the county June 1. 1913. He has served con tinuously as custodian since that date. Mr. Rich started work July 23, 1926.
