NAZIS MAY LEAVE NORWEGIAN PORTS "rippled Condition Of Surface Navy May Force Evacuation STOCKHOLM. Nov. 15—f#)—1The npled condition of the German et may force the Nazis to qi pidon northern Norway as a . vV base and even evacuate tne lF Korth before the turn of the responsible naval authorities . oelieve. Some units of the V. ! have been withdrawn to the pV|.,t. Sea during the last few months. Xrother reason for withdrawing German fleet from Norway’s iicji-d" is the fact lhat the Allies '■•o longer send convoys to Mur It as to combat this sup ipie to Soviet Russia that the Germans moved some of their heaviest units into the northern waters. pjciv ir, the ‘latest information ooir'inable here on the Nazi fleet itself: •r; L io.000-ton cruiser Admiral UtiVper. long laid up in a Baltic ;.f has been written off for the deration; the Hipper’s sister ship, ,‘,1C prinz Eugen. is reported to mmc been converted into a train .ng ship: the Gneisenau, a 26, 000-ton battleship mauled by the PAF when she made her dash from Brest to the Baltic last year. ; reported being used as an anti aircraft training school at the Baltic port of Gdynia: the pocket battleship Luetzow. previously re , ..-inri to have been sabotaged, is reported here to have been dam ped so badly it is uncertain when tie -v 11 return to action, the 35.000 •cn battleship Tirpitz was damag ;i(j i;,<t September when British n.idaet submarines made a dar attack into her fjord hide w"gy: and the aircraft carrier Qrf; Zeppelin is reported in a Bddc port, needing months of -o put her into fighting shape, j, a result, the 26.000-ton bat :.Y,;ip Scharnborst and other Lin'ts which might be still lurk ing m northern waters may up nenor and sneak for the Baltic. -V MIDDLING NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 15—UP)— The average price of middling 15 16 inch cotton today at ten desig nated Southern spot markets was 20 cents a bale higher at 19.78 cents a pound: average for the past 30 market days 20.06: mid dling 7-8 inch average 18.72. Nov. 15—W—Malaria is the greatest threat to the health of service men going to the tropics. Dr. Herbert Charles Clark, director of the Gorgas Memorial laboratory at the Pana ma Canal Zone and foremost au thority on tropical diseases, de clared today in giving an illus trated clinic at Duke university school of medicine. ‘'Most service men consider snake bites and the possibility of being eaten by crocodiles as the prime dangers of the tropics, but these are insignificant in com parison to disease-carrying in sects.” Dr. Clark said. “We now know that service men who go to danger areas do not sufficient I Iy realize the danger of malarial ! conditionals. Service men are be ing taught to protect themselves both by the use of proper drugs and the avoidance of danger zones.” Dr. Clark said that deep in the jungle one is relatively safe from malarial contagion, but it is a1 the ports and native villages that the seed beds of the disease deve lop. There mosquitos, ticks, anc lice contact diseased persons anc consequently themselves become dangerous disease-carriers. -V NEW YORK. N. J., Nov 15 _j.P)_ As delegates of countries wrestled with the complicated prob lem of financing the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Adminis tration. Brazil came forward today with the suggestion that the finan cial formula be based on foreign trade figures. Eurico Penteado. Brazilian dele gate, said his nation, largest ex porting country in South America with the exception of Argentina, which is not a member of UNRRA, would like to base her contribu tions on her foreign trade with the areas which would receive relief. For his country, he said, the problem of reviving Europe after the w'ar would be more than a hu manitarian one. He said it also would be a commercial question, since Brazil. living on foreign trade, wished to regain her Euro pean customers as soon as possible. The nation, he said, would not want to wait until Europeans had lost the coffee-drinking habit. T> r, ,3■Rr*Q*7ll PYnPft.Prt 1.0 meet her financial contribution to UNRRA largely through coffee, but also through supplies of cereals, sugar, cocoa and cotton. The Brai'lian plan did not ap pear to be uniformly acceptable here to Latin American delegates. Carlos Davila. Chilean delegate, said a figure based on foreign trade would take too much out of Chile, proportionately, since so many of the companies exporting from Chile were owned by foreign cap itals. Pentedo's suggestion came after a finance committee meeting in which it appeared that tne United States and England would prefer a financial basis predicted on na tional income. He said it would be i simpler to ask a Brazilian con i tribution from the general popu : lation based on foreign trade, since | everyone understood they were I producing for a sale abroad. He I added that the problem of de termining his nation’s national in come would be too great. England's position was explained thus: She lives on foreign trade, but because much comes out of one pocket and goes into another, she would be playing a much larg er proportion of the entire purse if the basis were set on foreign trade. A combination formula may be evolved as the delegates strive for payments that could cause least hurt to their respe live countries. -V Germans Report Mass Of Allied Ships In Naples Harbor Works By The Associated Press A large concentration of Allied vessels in Naples harbor and ac tive British mine-sweeping opera tions in Gaeta Gulf indicates the Allies are preparing to make an amphibious landing behind the German lines on the Tyrrhenian seacoast of Italy, Capt. Ludwig Sertorious. Nazi military com j mentator. declared in a broad i cast last night f Monday). •'Between Mignano and the Ga rigliano river mouth, the left wing of the Fifth United States Army hardly has stirred for about a week.” he said in a Berlin broad cast recorded by the Associated Press. ”It is quite possible that this inactivity is caused by the not yet concluded preparations for the new Allied landing enter prise.” Sertorious said Gen. Sir Ber nard L. Montgomery’s Eighth Army was massing enormous quantities of artillery along the Sangro river front near the Adri atic, and that as soon as these preparations were complete “a mass attack against the Sangro sector must be reckoned with.” XT_ State Publications Committee Convenes — i RALEIGH, Nov. 15 —(IP)—.
