1 BAPTIST PASTOR PLANS VACATE The Rev. Sankey Lee Blanton pastor of First Baptist church, wil leave for a month's vacation at his summer home, after the two serv »ices today on • What Think Ye oi Christ” and “Climbing.” The Rev. Mr Blanton will re sume his pasto-ate Sunday, Sep tember 6. The pastor emeritus, the Rev. -J. H. Foster, D. D , will assume the pulpit throughout the month of Au gust. He will also conduct the Wednesday evening prayer serv ices. Sir -Arthur Sullivan’s immortal ‘ The Lost Chord” will be sung by John McDougall, dramatic baritone at the 11 o’clock morning service today. McDougall, former soloist with the First Baptist choir, is now stationed at Shaw Field, S. C. The anthem oi the morning, is entitled ‘Be Thou My Vision”, an ancient Irish poem arranged by Mary Byrne and Eleanor Hull, set to music by Leroy B. Campbell. Mrs. Herman B. Moore, mezzo 9*prano, will be guest soloist at file evening service, singing "One of God’s Days ” by W. Stillman Martin. Three old - time gospel hymns will be sung by the choir and congretation; "I Walk With the King, Hallelujah”, "When the Roll is Called up Yonder,” and “I Know Whom I Have Believed.” The 15 - minute organ medita tions will begin at 10:45 a.m. -and 7:45 p.m. David F. Machtel, operatic tenor engaged by the First Baptist last October, returns from Wisconsin this week, and will appear as so loist next Sunday morning. He was formerly associated with Fred Waring’s Pennsywanians before his induction into the Army. -V New Reading Course Is Tried Out At Duke DURHAM, July 29 —ffl— A new course designed for children who have reading difficulties and for teachers who are interested in overcoming reading difficulties is being tried out at duke University this summer by Miss Dorothy Van Alstyne, visiting assistant profes sor of Education and Psychology. Twenty little giade school pulples from the Durham schools who have been tested and found to have dif ficulty in reading are enrolled in l ip course. Defective vision and pf or health and school attend ance were eliminated as contribut ing factors and each’s difficulty has been analyzed and diagnosed. Two or three of the children have been assigned to a teacher who is learning to handle reading difficulties by actual experience. The teacher gives the child indivi dual attention, helping him to over come his handicap. -V WOUNDED IN INVASION WHITEVILLE, July 29—Pfc. James P. Owens, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Outraged zoo officials locked him up in a spare skunk’s cage 'to sweat out his hangover. Deacon, who acquired his name before bad habits, left the zoo at dusk yesterday.
