I— -* Arnold Says Luftwaffe Larger But Gas Lacking By JAMES J. STRE3IG Associated Press Aviation Editor. WASHINGTON. Oct. 12.—Iff) The Luftwaffe now has more air craft than when Hitler sent it against Poland in 1939, but it is grounded for lack of gasoline and oil, Gen. H. H. Arnold said today. The commanding general of the United States Army Air Forces said that the non-flying status of the Nazi -warplanes resulted from carefully planned and boldly exe cuted allied attacks on their sources of supply, their communi cations and their storage places. Germany’s present productive capacity for synthetic fuels, he told a meeting of the Wings club, is down to 30 percent of normal. Much of the petroleum it had hop ed to use is in Norway and Greece —cut off by lack of communi cations—and in pipelines and sto rage places where it cannot be used. He said that the fuel shortage led the Germans first to reduce training, then to cut out miscel laneous missions, next to cut fly ing by “brass hats” and finally to end training altogether, so that in addition to a lack of fuel there is also now a shortage of pilots. Later, in answer to a question, General Arnold asserted that “of course” the B-29 Super-fortress op erations against Japan have been worthwhile. “Some day they will be flying over Japan in the same number that B-17’ns now are flying over Germany and then you won’t’ ask me that question,’’ he said. In addition to his overall AAF command, Arnold heads the 20th Air Force which flies the B-29's on a worldwide assignment -V MISS WILKIN ELECTED GOLDSBORO, Oct. 12. — (JP> — Miss Helen D. FUGITIVE BEGINS RETURN TO TEXAS Francis Elva Smith, alias Charlie Lester Bair, alias “Big Time Char lie,” age 38, accused of complicity, along with Bill Rising, in the ran sacking of Kingoff’s Jewelry store and the theft of some $6,500 in jewels last July, left Thursday morning for Texas, where he will answer fugitive from justice charges. Smith allegedly escaped from the prison at Huntsville, Texas, where he was being held for bank robbery on a 25 year sentence. He was in the custody of W. I. Crane, agent of the Texas prison system, and will be driven to Cal ifornia where Crane must pick up another prisoner before Smith reaches his penal destination. In preparing Smith for the long ride home, Deputy Sheriff Charles Snow searched him and found an unpretentious little home-made weapon, concealed in the lining of his handkerchief pocket. The in strument had evidently been fash ioned of a strip of tin unwound in opening a potted meat can, Snow said. The strip had been carefully filed and flattened, so it might easily be used in the unfastening of hand cuffs. In a demonstraion yester day morning, Snow showed how the piece could be effectively uti lized. At odd times, Smith had con fessed his dissatisfaction at t h e thought of returning to his home prison. He told one policeman: “I am going to get away if I can.”. The big fellow was absolved of blame in the Rising case, and was thus released to the Texas authori ties. Some of us seem to think that because the south votes solidly democratic, that should be our contribution. . .our financial support is necessary if we are to win.” Leaders from Mississippi and Tennessee, were to arrive today to join those of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.
