Sets Collection Mark
Declaring that the town of
Wrightsville Beach “is maintaining
an excellent record in tax collect
ions,” Town Clerk R. L. Benson
62, today reported thet of the $11.
889.11 tax levy in the past four
years only $2,329.76 had not been
collected.
Tax notices have just been mail
ed to all property owners for the
1944 levy of $31,774.62 on which a
discount of one-half of one per cent
will be allowed until November 1.
The town has no uncollected
taxes prior to 1940, Benson said,
and of the total 1940 levy of $22,
949.28 only $75.20 is uncollected.
Out of' the levy of $26,843.24 for
1941, $74.10 is uncollected; of the
levy of $30,156.36 for 1942, $499.92
is uncollected; of the 1943 levy of
$30,940.51, only $1,680.24 is uncol
lected.

Philippine Defenses
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 20.—UR
—A Japanese Domei News Agen
cy broadcast today said Gen.
Paulino Santos, chief of the Jap
anese-controlled Philippine con
stabulary, was on an inspection
tour to determine if that force
“is ready” to meet the American
“attempt” at a landing in the
islands. — .
The broadcast, recorded by the
Federal Communications Com
mission, said also that General
Guillermo Francisco, adviser to
puppet President Jose P. Laurel,
assured press representatives that
Nipponese strength in the Phil
ippines, including the constabu
lary, “is enough to guarantee the
safety of the country from any at
tempt by the enemy at invasion.”
Francisco formerly commanded
the constabulary.

MIHAILOVIC IN ITALY
NEW YORK, Oct. 20.—The Bern
radio, recorded by CBS, reported
today that Gen. Draja Mihailovic,
former Yugoslav minister of war
and leader of the Chetniks, has
gone to Italy. No source for the
report was given, CBS said.

for the United States was 42 per
100.000 as compared with 47 in
1939.

SLIGHTLY SOFT

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 —UP)— The
stock market, on balance, was a
trifle soft today although scatter
ed specialties managed to edge in
to new high ground for the year or
longer and selling elsewhere never
was urgent.
Encouraging was the Philippine
invasion, continued good war news
from Europe, electron trends and
invididual business prospects. Ac
counts were trimmed here and
there, however, because the ave
raged had failed to penetrate the
7-yar peakes ceacmed last July
and had encountered liquidation
marks in addition a little re
conversion apprehension revived as
it was suggested that this prob
lem would be accentuated should
the Japanese and Geran conflicts
terminate about the same time.
Trends were spotty from the
start and declines of fractions to
a point or so were in the majority
at the close.
The Associated Press 06-s t o c k
composite was down .1 of a point
at 55.6, its first dip since Monday.
Of 876 issues registering, 337 were
lower, 282 higher and 257 un
changed. Transfers of 744,615
shares compared with 828,700
Thursday.
At best levels for 1944 were
North American Aviation, still re
flecting a bofsted dividend; Crown
Zellerbachn Naion Biscuit, Texas
Pacific Land Trust and G r e at
Northern. Modest improvement
was retained by Greyhound, Ana
conda, Kennecott, Sears Roehuck,
Woolworth, Philip Morris and Con
solidated Edison.

Motors, Santa Fe, Southern Paci
fic, American Telephone, Graham
Paige, American Can, Du Pont,
Douglas Aircraft, Montgomery
Ward and J. C. Penney.
Bonds and commodities were un
even. At Chicago wheat was off
3-4 to 1 5-8 cents a bushel and
rye down 3-4 to 1 1-4. Cotton lost
5 to 30 cents a bale.
Among curb advancers were
Eversharp, Sherwin Williams
Cities Service, Singer Mfg. and
southern New England Telephone.
Turnover here was 233,820 shares
versus 292,455 yesterday.
