NEW YORK, Oct. 27. — VP) —
The cotton futures marked devel
oped an irregular pattern today as
traders continued to await actual
operations of the government cot
ton purchase program. Closing
prices were 35 cents a bale higher
to 15 cents lower with the near
months relatively steady on ag
gressive mill buying and covering.
Market advices reported mill
buying o spot cotton has been
small during the past week. Ship
pers are taking the bulk of the
offerings in the southeast.
Futures closed 35 cents a bale
higher to 15 cents lower.

MARKET PRICES
ARE IRREGULAR
NEW YORK, Oct. 27.—UP>—Buy
ers displayed a little more cour
age in today’s stock market and,
while many leaders continued to
operate at lower levels, selected
issues were lifted fractions to a
point or more.
Mixed tendencies prevailed at
the start. Recoveries began to ap
pear in most departments after
midday and final prices were no
worse than a shade uneven. Low
quoted stocks, most of which got
nowhere, came out in blocks runn
ing to 33,000 shares and propped
volume although slowdowns were
plentiful.
Commitments were reinstated
here and there on the idea the
list had undergone sufficient liqui
dation for the time being. Earn
ings, dividends and individual st
uatons propped favorites. The Pa
cific victory, however, again serv
ed as a cautionary influence be
cause of the feeling that severe
reconversion pains might follow a
simultaneous ending of both the
far eastern and European conflicts.
The Associated Press 60-stock
average was up 2 of a point at
54.7 Of 843 issues registering, 338
were up, 271 down and 234 un
changed. Transfei totalled 827,335
shares compared with 927,090 yes
terday.
Steels rallied in the final few
minutes, U.S. Steel ending up 3-4
and Bethlehem 7-8. American and
Foreign Power common hit a new
year’s low, down 1 3-8 at 2 1-8,
and the second preferred lost 2
points, while the two senior cu
mulative $6 and $7 stocks rose
1 3-4 and 2 points, respectively,
in the wake of the company’s re
capitalization plan. Grumman Air
craft pushed up 1 7-8 to a 1944
top. Texas co. advanced 7-8 in re
sponse to a 50-cent extra disburse
ment, first since 1941.

Douglas Aircraft, United Aircraft,
du Pont, Eastman Kodak and Al
lied Chemical. Losers included Zo
nite Products, liveliest performer;
General Motors, Goodrich, West
mghouse, Johns-Manville, North
American, Deere and Montgomery
Ward.
Bonds were mixed. At Chicago
wheat was up 1-8 to 3-4 of a cent
a bushel. Cotton was 35 cents a
bale higher to 15 cents lower.
