NEW YORK, Nov. 17.—MB—The
cotton futures market fluctuated
indecisively over a range of 70
cents a bale today to close 20
cents a bale lower to 5 cents
higher.
Activity was confined chiefly to
routine mill buying and covering.
Hedge selling and commission
house liquidation depressed prices
as much as 50 cents a bale in
early trading but the market later
improved as traders awaited
fresh developments on the sub
sidy program and the domestic
purchase plan.
December liquidation and
switching into later months was
a feature.

NEW YORK, Nov. 17.— (/P)-*Scat
tered stock favorites managed to
keep in the plus column today
while numerous market leaders
stood still or slipped to slightly
lower levels.
A little short covering toward
the last transformed a few losses
into gains but irregularly lower
tendencies prevailed from the
start although offerings were light
throughout. Declines predomnat
ed at the close.
The usual week-end caution stall
ed many potential purchasers. In
addition reconversion doubts, bas
ed on the big Western front push
and the possibility of a quick
European victory, accentuated
conservatism. Thoughts of ex
panding tax selling from now on
proved a handicap and m,any cus
tomers remained aloof to await
congressional moves and more
light on 1945 taxes. Dividends
and earnings continued as props.
The Associated Press 60-stock
average was up .1 of a point at
54.6 owing to timid last-minute
comebacks in several rails. Of
850 issues appearing. 332 were
down, 175 up and 243 unchanged.
Transfers totaled 705,660 shares
compared with 847.260 Thursday
and were the smallest for a full
session since Oct. 31.
At peaks for 1944 were Sandard
Gas $7 preferred, up 5 1-2; Pitts
burgh Coal preferred, up 4 points
on meager sales, and Emerson
Electric, up 1. Modest improve
ment was shown for Chrysler,
Santa Fe. Great Northern, Good
rich Paramount Pictures. Westing
house. Johns-Manville, Montgom
ery Ward and Boeing. Texas Pa
cific Land Trust added 7-8 to its
stumble of yesterday. Down also
were U. S. Steel. Pennsylvania.
General Motors, U. S. Rubber,
Douglas Aircraft. Eastman Kodak,
American Telephone, Standard Oil

Railway bonds did better selec
tively. At Chicago wheat was
unchanged to off 1-4 of a cent a
bushel. Cotton was 20 cents a
bale lower to 5 cents higher.
Among strong spots in the Curb
were Illinois Power, up 1 7-8 and
Raytheon, up 3 1-4. Minor reces
sions were posted for Electric
Bond Si Share, Cities Service, Re
public Aviation and American
Cyanamid “B”. Turnover here
was 240.345 shares versus 218,
440 the day before.
