Miss Spitzer refused to “sweeten” her scripts. So in Hollywood what do j(ou think they’ve made her? Go to the head of the class. Joe. Exactly. “But please don’t say I’m any thing that sounds silly,” she pleads “It’s true that quite often they hand me a script when they think a love scene needs something and perhaps I can improve it. But I don’t pose as an authority, and I certainly don’t want to give the MARIAN SPIXZER . . . Hearts Is Her Game . . , impression that I’m better than other writers in this or any other department.” For all that, many scripts come to the Spitzer desk for that ro mantic doctoring while she herself works on the scripts for “The Dol ly Sisters,” story of the famous en tertainers, and a film biography of O. Henry. “I don’t know how it began,” she says, “unless it was some work I did on the script for Hein Deutsch’s novel, ‘The Last Best Hope’ a few years ago. The script was extremely political as written —dealing with the Spanish civil war—and it had to be changed itno a love story. I changed it. Yes, that must be how it began.” As for the ingredients of a good love scene: “I think a good love scene is honest, believable, and devoid of discomfort or embarrass ment to the audience. If it causes the high school girls to titter, it’s not good. It takes honest writing, directing and acting to make one. Ofien the best love scenes are un derplayed. I’d rather cite the love scene between Ingrid Bergmar and Humphrey Bogart in ‘Casa blanca’.” The “love stuff” in her writinc career does not please her twc sons, Eric, 13. and Tommy, 8. “They’re disgusted,” she says “because I don't write for Abbotl and Costello—or exciting pictures like ‘Wing and a Prayer!’ ” Knit In Snort Yarn by Alice Brooks The cable stitch (a favorite be cause it looks so smart yet is so easy to do) makes this knitted set a must with the college crowd. • This knitted hat and bag set wit; cable stitch has that expensive look. The doctor didn’t |Say. But maybe: Women tire less easily than mer because though there is always some woman to say “You poor dear” to the man who claims he is “dog tired” no body loves a tired woman. Mavbe the reason women learn faster is because they meet life’s greatest challenge when they are young. A man works up gradually to becoming an important person or a man of responsibility, but a woman has her main job in life thrust on her when she becomes a “Mama”, and that is usually when she is just a girl herself. To handle that job she has to learn fast. EASILY EXPLAINED Why they live longer is easy. No v.ife wants a successor in her hus band’s affections and her only way of making sure she won’t have one is to outlive him. And the sex that is condemned for life to cooking three meals a day and doing the dishes after wards just has to endure routine good-naturedly. As for taking orders well, men have conditioned women to that by building up the bugaboo that there is something mighty funny about a woman’s taking herself seriously enough to get to the place where she can give orders herself. Which just adds up to the fact that our superior traits are prob ably largely the result of oyr in ferior position.
