18 YANKS KILLED IN V-BOMB BLAST aSedEMex “Qt°iAonar| FORCE PARIS, Dec. 7—UP)—A V bomb which exploded recently m the courtyard of an American Army hospital in Belgium killed 18 American military personnel and eight Belgian civilians and wounded 50 persons in the medical corps, it was disclosed today. The victims included doctors, nurses, enlisted personnel and pa tients. Four ambulances in the courtyard were demolished and a three story wing of the hospital was destroyed. Fire exploded in the pharmacy, where oxygen tanks and alcohol exploded. (The first accounts of the bomb hit, received November 29, said 12 persons were killed but did not identify them as Americans. There were 1,150 patients in the hospital.) “Everyone was knocked on their ears for an instant,” the colonel commanding the rospital reported. “They clicked immediately and went to work. Nurses with blood streaming down their faces were giving first aid and carrying lit ters, and walking patients helped.” Arrangements were made with Belgian authorities for the use of another building and the whole hospital was moved in hour and a half. DEMILLE SEEKS AID OF COURT LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7. — (^P>— Cecil B. DeMille today asked Su perior Court to enjoin the American Federation of Radio Artists from suspending him for refusal to pay a $1 assessment. r'hc radio and movie producer, who declined to contribute to a fund to combat proposition No. 12, ihe so-called “right to work” State constitutional amendment on the November 7 ballot, alleged that co workers on his Monday evening air show have been told they may not perform if the fee is not paid. His complaint asserted that the union plans to bar him from the organization, solely because of the filing of the injunctive action and 1ha . the other performers on his program have been urged not to appear if the suit is filed. The complaint named 34 AFRA j directors. DeMille declared his 1 suspension would cause him ir reparable damage after eight years’ building up an audience for the program, Fe contended the suspension w- d create an impression that be had committed acts detrimental 10 unionism whereas, he added, he is not opposed to unionism. 12 CHILDREN HURT IN SCHOOL BUS AND TRUCK COLLISION COLUMBIA, S. C., Dec. 7.—UP)— Twelve high school children were injured, some seriously, in the col lision of a school bus and a con struction truck at a highway in tersection this afternoon near their school at Swansea, 20 miles south west of here. Approximately 25 children were in the 15-year-old bus, the body of which was demolished, the State Highway Patrol reported. The injured children, four girls and eight boys, and the bus driver and owner, Jim Rucker, were brought to the Baptist hospital here in three ambulances and sev eral cars. All hospital attendants and sev eral outside doctors were called in for the emergency. Injured chil dren were put in emergency and operating and reception rooms and the hospital lobby was crowded with parents and relatives of the injured. 18 Americans, Britons Killed In Plane Crash LONDON, Dec. 7—(IP)—The Paris radio said tonight that 18 Ameri cans and Britons were killed when a military transport plane crashed In the Pyrenees near Perpignan yesterday. Five others on board were injured. The broadcast said the plane crashed on a 7,000 foot peak and that the bodies had not been re covered. SENATE LAUNCHES CIGARET INQUIRY WASHINGTON, Dec. 7.— (ffi — Chairman Mead (D-NY) disclosed today the opening of a full-fledged inquiry into the cigarette shortage by the Senate War Investigating Committee. He set a public hearing for nex' Wednesday for questioning of rep resentatives of the National Asso ciation of Tobacco Distributors, the War Department, manufactur ers, the War Manpower Commis sion and the War Food Adminis tration. Reporting on a preliminary checkup by staff investigators. Mead said their findings indicated that more cigarettes are being manufactured than ever before, but that the armed forces’ reo”ire ments have almost doubled since last year. This has resulted in shortages in the civilian supply, he said, which may be expected to con tinue. FIRESTONE FIRM TO UTILIZE PLANT NEAR BURLINGTON BURLINGTON, Dec. 7—(1P>—The Firestone Tire and Rubber Co will begin manufacture of war material in a plant here in the near future, Rep. Carl T. Durham’s office in Washington said today. The company will use the plant formerly occupied by the aircraft division of the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Co. The announcement was made by Rep. Durham’s office and Sam Hus bands, president of the Defense Plant Corporation, to a group of Burlington citizens now in Wash ington inquiring into the status of the idle plant. The new project calls for some $7,000,000 to $10.000;000 worth of equipment to be moved to Burling ton, the delegation was told. From 1,200 to 15.00 persons, most os them highly skilled, would be required to operate the plant. The production schedule is to begin as soon as the plant can be put into operation, Rep. I DISCOMFORTS SENATOR ATTACKS BRITAIN’S POLICY WASHINGTON, Dec. 7.— (.« — Senator Ellender (D-La) asserted in the Senate today that Great j Britain is engaged by force of arms in “dictating” the choice of leaders in liberated Italy and Greece. Thus, he said, Britain “is taking the lead in causing disunity among the Allies.” Ellender introduced a resolution to put the Senate on record as opposing the formation of military blocs, regional alliances among the nations of Europe as “inimical to international peace and securi ty.” He declared the resolution would be “a warning to Great Britain, and in fact to all nations, that we as a nation propose to help formulate a world security or ganization and that this organiza tion is not to be looked upon with suspicion or as a makebelieve or ganization ” -V DEATH SENTENCE MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 7.— UP)—Henry Sparks, 33-year-old Negro, was convicted today of criminalty as saulting a young white woman and was sentenced to die in Florida’s electric chair.
