MARKET FINISHES 1944 ON UPBEAT NEW YORK. Dec. 30.— (UP) — The Stock Market finished 1944 this week on an upbeat that car ried the main list to a new high since Sept. 4, 1937 as the nation’s industry went all-out in produc tion of weapons of war to hasten victory in Europe. Stock Market valuations rose more than half a billion dollars in .he last week of the year to bring Ihe gain for December to nearly 5J,000,000,000. The rise for the ear was almost $11,000,000,000. Although improving European war news chiefly was responsible lor the week’s rally, bullishness also reflected publication of fav orable corporation earnings re ports, stock split-up action by Westinghouse Electric and United Merchants & Manufacturers, and a statement by the Magazine Iron Age that new and rising war ma tenal demands from Europe may mean cutbacks after V-E day of only 15 to 25 per cent, or less, in stead of 40 per cent or more, as had been expected a few weeks ag° Motors were sharply higher un aer leadership of Chrysler. Stude baker this week announced that its 1944 sales reached a record $410, 000,000 and Willys-Overland Motors Inc., reported net income for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 of $1.64 a share, compared with $1.32 in the previous year. Passenger and freight traffic of . '__ i-oilrnn/le lM 1Qdd roaphpH record proportions, the Association of American Railroads said this week. Confirmation by WestinghouSfc Electric directors this week of a report the company planned a stock splitup sent common and preferred shares up more than 10 points. The stocks are to be split 4-for-l. Stock of United Mer chants & Manufacturers also climb ed sharply on announcement ol a 2-for-l splitup. Commenting on such action by various corporations, Standard & Poor's corporation said splitups are occurring on a scale remin iscent of the 1920’s, with the same invigorating effect on the market for the issues involved.” Such splits have been announced by Dec. CHICAGO GRAIN CHICAGO, Dec. 30.— (#)—Grain futures markets absorbed heavy realizing sales today and closed rear the top prices after a session of extremely heavy year-end trad ing. After an uncertain beginning all markets turned strong. Wheat led the advance and May rye estab lished a new five-month high. Gen eral buying, by both commission houses and professional operators, developed about mid-session. Of ferings were light until the ad vance encouraged profit taking sales. Market sources attributed the heavy demand to short covering and to a higher stock market. Short covering in wheat was prompted by indications the de fense supplies corporation would announce new flour subsidy rates during the week-end. The hew schedules are expected at least to reflect a recent four-cent boost in ceiling prices for cash wheat. Grain traders anticipate a heavy increase in flour sales to result. At the finish wheat was 1 1-8 to 15-8 higher than yesterday’s close, May $1.64 7 -8-1.65. Corn was up 1-2 to 1 1-4, May $1.11 7-8 12. Oats were 7-8 to 1 1-8 higher, May 67 1-8-68. Rye was up 3-8 to off 1-8, May $1,14 5-8—3-4. Barley was 1 3-4 to 2 higher, May $1.12. Cash interests and commission houses were the best buyers of corn ana iraae sources aunuuieu the increased demand to reports the government plans to build up a 50 million bushel stockpile of the grain to assure processors supplies in the event of a short crop next season. Cash handlers reported relatively light bookings, 135,000 bushels, for deferred ship ment and sales of 25,000 bushels.
