Officers' Club Will Hold New Year's Social The Wilmington Officer’* club will usher in the social activities for the new year with a gala New Year’s Eve dance tonight at the club, located at 121 1-2 Princess street. The club is being especial ly decorated for tonight’s affair and music will be furnished by a 13-piece orchestra from Camp Le jeune with special vocalists. The music will begin at 9 o’clock. The club has recently been re decorated and among the social activities scheduled include a dance each Saturday evening with the first dance of each month a for mal affair. Tonight’s dance will also be formal. Officers of the club are: Lieut W. L. Hutton, president, and Lieut. G L. Curtis, secretary-treasurer. * * * Miss Val Brandon, William Waison Wed NEW BERN, Dec. 30.—Miss Va! Brandon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Brandon of Memphis, Tenn., and William Andrew Watson, son of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel P. Watson of New Bern, were married Satur day evening. December 16, in a candlelight ceremony at Idlewild Presbyterian church at Memphis. Dr. Thomas K. Young officiated, and nuptial music was presented by Thomas Webber, Jr., organist, and Lt. Manning Nelson, soloist, i The maid-of-honor was Miss Mer-I ry Aken, and bridesmaids were Mrs. Joseph Rhea, Miss Dorothea Wyatt, Miss Jean Venn, Miss Mar jorie C r y m e s, Miss Rebecca Hclmes and Mrs. Hunter Hardi son. They wore identical gowns of crystalline tissue taffeta, and their headdresses were circular shoulder veils held with jeweled combs. They carried old-fashioned nose gays. Ushers were J. C. Rivers, Travis Whitehead, Ewald House, Air Ca det John N. Flint, Jr., George Simpson and Lieutenant Rhea. Guilbert LePage Brandon, brother of the bride, was best man. i j The bride was given in marriage by her father. She wore a wedding gown of antique satin, with decol lete yoke of silk marquisette. The skirt was worn over a taffeta hoop skirt and fell into a long train. Her veil of misty illusion fell from a Mary Queen of Scots bonnet with pearlized orange blossoms appli qued on the crown. She carried a bouquet of white orchids and val ley lilies. After the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Brandon entertained at a re-! ception at their home, j The couple left later for a wed ding trip to New Bern and Tampa, Fla. For traveling the bride wore a dark-brown shepherd check wool suit, with brown accessories and a corsage of white orchids. They will reside at Memphis. * * * Miss Emily Powell, Reges Keppel Engaged Mr. and Mrs. David Sandlin. Jr., announce the engagement of Mrs. Sandlin's sister. Miss Emily Powell to Reges Van Keppel, sea man first class USCG. Miss Powell is the daughter of J- C. Powell of this city, i Seaman Keppel is the son of Mrs. Eva Jones of Oklahoma. Reservations can be made with the club's secretary. Mrs. Boehm at 4751 during the first of he week, however all reservations must be in by 6 p. m. Wednesday. Luncheon is served at 1:30 o’clock. Franklin Elmore Mrs. Charles W. Martin of Wood mere, Long Tsland, has announced the engagement of her daughter, Caryl May Martin, to Lieutenant Ijg) Franklin Harper Elmore, USNR, serving in the Merchant Marine Service, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Elmore of Wilming ton. Miss Martin is the daughter of the late Dr. Martin. Miss Martin attended the Law rence School, Hewlett, Long Is land and was graduated from The Mary C. Wheeler School in Provi dence, Rhode Island. She is the granddaughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Wesley Martin, West field, N. J., and of Mr. and Mrs. Howard B. Henderson of Balti more, and a descendant on her mother’s side of General Robert E. Lee. Lieut. Elmore was graduated from the Baylor School in Chatta nooga, Tenn., and attended David son college in Davidson. He en tered the United States Merchant Marine academy, Great Neck, Long Island in October 1843, and is now serving as second officer on board ship in the Atlantic. Front St. Miss Frances Biddle, Jasper Needham, Jr., Wed At Winter Park The wedding of Miss Frances Biddle and Jasper Norwood Need ham, Jr., of Rocky Mount, took place on Wednesday, December 27, at high noon in the Winter Park Presbyterian church with the Rev. A. K. Dudley performing the cere mony. The church was decorated for the occasion with bridal greenery, white gladioli and tall burning can dles in candelabra. Prior to the ceremony and while the vows were being spoken a pro gram of nuptial music was ren dered by Miss Jane Hobbs, organ ist, and Miss Eleanor Moore, so prano, ang, "I Love You Truly,” and "Because.” The bridal couple entered the church together unattended. She wore a suit of heavenly blue wool with luggage color accessories and a corsage of white roses. Ushers were Tommy Needham, brother of the bridegroom, and Shelton Moore. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Biddle. She is a graduate of New Hanover High school and is now a junior at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. She is a pledge member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Needham of Wilmington. He is a graduate of New Hanover High school and at present is a senior in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. He is a mem ber of Omega Tau Sigma profes sional fraternity. Following tne ceremony the cou ple left for a short wedding trip after which they will go to Auburn, Ala., to continue their studies. On Tuesday evening the bride's parents entertained at a reception at the home of Misses Loman on Audubon boulevard. Christmas dec orations were used throughout the home. The bride’s table was laid with a handmade cut-work cloth and was centered with a three tiered wedding cake surrounded by smilax and silver ornaments in crystal holders. The bride’s cake was served by Mrs. George A. Moore, Sr., aunt of the bride. In the sun room Mrs. J. S. Hall pre sided over the punch bowl. Misses Elsie Earl Orrell, Betty Hall. Others entertain ing for the bride prior to her mar riage were Misses Ruth and Jean Bostian, Betty Hall and Miss Elsie Earl Orrell. * * * Junior Woman's Club Entertains The North Carolina Junior Soro sis entertained at its annual Christ mas tea on Saturday afternoon, from 5 to 6 o’clock in the after noon at the clubhouse on North Third street. Members and their guests were greeted at the door by the hos tess, Miss Sarah Bradshaw, who introduced them to the receiving line composed of Mrs. Lewis Bright, club president; Miss Doro thy Forbes, state president of jun ior clubs; Mrs. Sam Sondey, state secretary of junior clubs; Mrs. J. C. Williams, first vice-president of North Carolina Federation of Wom ens clubs; Mrs. C. Wayne Spen cer, president of the North Caro lina Sorosis; Mrs. S. H. Parker, sponsor of the North Carolina Jun ior Sorosis; and Mrs. W. A. Fon vielle, sponsor emeritus. The clubrooms were beautifully decorated for the occasion with smilax, holly, and cut flowers. Tea was served at a beautifully ap pointed table by Mrs. Robert Way and Miss Vivian Hiers. The table was centered with a bowl of red and white carnations flanked by burning tapers on either end. Alpha Beta Chi Sorority Gives Annual Yule Party The Alpha Beta Chi Sorority had their annual formal Christmas din ner-dance at the Plantation club on Thursday evening'. Members of the sorority and their dates were ' served a turkey dinner during the j evening and an orchestra provided the music for dancing'.
