NEW YORK, Feb 14. — UP) —
Investment rated industrials and
selected rails scored new advances
in the stock market today, although
closing prices were under the day’s
best levels. ■
The improvement ranged from
major fractions to more than a
point, and there were a few wider
swings.
In breadth and activity dealings
exceeded Tuesday’s. The Associat
ed Press 60-stock average, while
ahead only .2 of a point against
yesterday’s gain of .8 of a point,
at 60.7 was the highest since Sep
tember 9, 1937.
During the day. 1.015 issues
crossed the tape, compared with
965 Tuesday, the greatest number
since May of 1940 when the Nazis
were sweeping across France.
Volume at 2,060,000 shares,
against 1.800.000 yesterday, was
the largest since January 9 of this
year. 0
American Telephone, down 1-2
at 161 7-8, was under water most
of the day, and toward the last
was joined by Southern Railway
and Texas Co.
Bonds also rose from the pres
sure of idle funds seeking employ
ment.
Cotton futures closed 10 cents
a bale lower to 35 cents a bale
higher.
