MARTS STUMBLE AFTER RISING NEW YORK, May 81.—(U.R)—The stock market averages stumbled to day after five successive rising ses sions to highest levels since 1937. Transfers of 1,210,000 shares com pared with 1,600,000 Tuesday. Customers returned from their holiday with selling ideas generally predominating. These were nased partly on the thought of a techni cal correction, talk of further Waihington steps to restrain speculation and fears of interna tional complications resulting from the row in Syria. *“ Idle investment funds and post-war prosperity hopes presisted as bolstering fac tors. The Associated Press 60-stock composite was off .5 of a point at 66.1 of 926 issues appearing, 452 were down, 268 pj and 206 un changed. Prominent casualties included Santa Fe, N. Y. Central, Southern Pacific, Southern Railway, U. S. Steel, Chrysler, General Motors, Goodyear, Sears Roebuck, Ameri can Can, Westinghouse, American Smelting and International Nickel. Continued optimism over the American Telephone refunding program lifted this stock to a new top in the forenoon but it backed away to finish unchanged at 172. M-K-T preferred and Canadian Pacific reached 1945 highs. Ahead were Johns-Manville, U. S. Gy sum, Du Pont and Woolworth. A few railway bonds enjoyed popularity but many loans faltered.
