Infant Found Dead After
Abduction By Two Girls
BY RUSS GREEN
United Press Staff Correspondent
PHILADELPHIA, June 2.—(U.R)—
Two hookey-playing sisters admit
ted today that their “baby” in a
game of “house’ was infant
Thomas Ripley, Jr., who was
found dead of a broken neck a few
hours after then abandoned him.
The girls, Irene, 15, and Janet,
11, told police they took the three
month-old baby from its carriage
and wheeled him, in another coach
they stole, to their “playhouse,”
the back porch of a deserted Uni
versity of Pennsylvania fraternity
house near their West Philadelphia
home.
The girls took turns at playing
“mother” to the infant. They un
dressed and dressed him repeat
edly, fondled him and called him
endearing names. After a few
hours of play, they covered his
nude body with his pink blanket
and placed him in the tall grass
of the yard. They went home at
school-closing. time in hopes they
would fool their mother into think
ing they had been at school all
day.
'Police believe inexpert handling
may have caused the broken neck.
There were no marks of violence
on the baby’s body.
The girls, who were calm
throughout the questioning by de

claimed the baby was alive when
they placed him in the grass. They
intended to return later and con
tinue their play.
The girls went to school as usual
the next day, and when they got
home, their mother, having read
of the baby’s death, confronted
them with the story. They admit
ted their part in the case, she said,
and she took therp to the family
preacher, who advised the mother
to turn them over to police, which
she did today.
Schwartz said the girls denied
any intent to hurt the infant.
"We just liked to play with the
baby,” they were quoted as say
