INDUSTRIALS
TAKE DRUBBING
NEW YORK, July 5.—Iff)—Be
lated selling hit the stock market
today and gave rails and pivotal
industrials one of their worst
drubbings of the year to date.
The list was moderately lower
from the start but dealings were
negligible until the final half hour
when the ticker tape speeded up
and leaders were thrown for losses
of one to more than two points.
Prices generally were around the
bottom at the close. Transfers of
910.000 shares compared with
860.000 Tuesday.
Customers returned from the
July fourth holiday to find margin
requirements boosted to 75 per
cent. This had been pretty well
forecast and, as the market has
largely been on a cash basis,
would have occasioned no particu
lar excitement. The idea that the
move was only the first of a num
ber of steps contemplated to stem
speculation, however, inspired the
trimming of accounts all along the
line. Today’s British election also
served as a cautionary influence.
The Associated Press 60-stock
average was off a full point at 65.6,
widest dip since June 28 and the
fourth largest of 1945. Of 899 issues
registering, 630 were down, 127 up
and 142 unchanged.

Oils, coppers and mail orders
were narrow. Modest advances
were held by American Telephone

Railway bonds dropped with
stocks. At Chicago rye fell 7-8 to
three cents a bushel and wheat
was off 1-2 to up 3-4. Cotton im
proved 40 to 90 cents a bale.
In the curb slipping tendencies
were displayed by Cities Service,
Electric Bond and Share, St. Regis

Turnover here amounted to 330,000
