The statement was drawn up by R. J. Thomas, UAW vice presidenl who was defeated for the presi dency by Reuther; Richard T. Leonard, a vice president; and L George F. Addes, secretary-treas urer. IRAN TO COLLECT TAXES ON BAHREIN ISLAND OIL LANDS TEHRAN, April 18—(U.R)—The government announced Thursday that taxes would be collected on American-produced oil of Bahrein island and that undesirable news stories to foreign points would be suppressed. First to be suppress ed were the dispatches of a British correspondent. The cabinet of Premier Ahmad Ghavam Es-sultaneh announced that Iran considers British-protect ed Bahrein island in the Persian Gulf an integral part of Iran, thereby challenging the hold which Britain has exercised on the is land through agreement with its Sheikh since 1892. League Votes Itself Out Of Existence GENEVA, April 18—(U.R)—1The League of Nations voted itself out of existence Thursday, 26 years, three months and eight days after it embarked on its vain project to .save the world from wars. Less than 500 persons were present, though the hall can seat 2,000. “Big Red House” Man Gets Jail Sentence , a NEW YORK, April 18—UP)— John Porter Monroe, who figured in a Congressional investigation as the owner of the "Big Red House on R street” in Washington, was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $100,000 in Federal court Thursday on charges of textile ceil ing price violation. Monroe, who changed his name from Monroe Kaplan, was con victed March 29 by a Federal court jury under a 30-count in dictment alleging conspiracy and illegal sale of textiles. U. S. Attorney John F. X. Mc Gohey described the defendant as "a man who was not in the tex tile business but went into it de liberately for the purpose of trad ing on shortages in textiles.” PROMOTION Promotion of Corporal T. E. Cook to the grade of sergeant was yesterday announced by Major H. J. Hatcher, State Highway Patrol head. Cook, who has been stationed in Raleigh, will replace J. R. Police Probe Attempt To Rob Beauty Parlor A Wednesday afternoon robbery attempt on the Bon Ton Beauty shop was yesterday being in vestigated by the police. According to authorities a youth, fged about 20, walked into the shop, located at No. 306 Southern building, and demanded money from the cash register. The owner, Mrs. Louise Robbins. scuffled with her assailant several minutes.
