NEWS TIDBITS * * * Bladen — Brunswick — Columbus — Craven — Duplin — Onslow — Pender — Robeson — Sampson GARDEN PILGRIMAGE NEW BERN, May 8. —The historical signs and numeral “bear” signs at various local points of interest have been newly painted in preparation for the numbers of visitors ex pected here Saturday and Sun day for the first postwar home and garden pilgrimage sponsor ed by the New Bern Garden club. The work was done by George P. Arrington, secretary of the New Bern Chamber of Commerce. One of his slogans for New Bern is “the historical capital in the Land of Enchant ing Waters.” There are 56 sites marked in the city with small “bear” signs containing con secutive numerals. A free guidebook is available at the city hall and at the chamber of commerce to give the record of the respective sites. DOCK CONSTRUCTION CHERRY POINT, May 8. — The Public Works department has started construction of a new wooden dock to be used for the serving of military water craft stationed in the Cherry Point area. Consisting of heavy beam framework mounted on driven pilings, the new structure will provide in creased fuelling and service facilities. The 150-foot dock and its adjacent activities are used solely for the repair and refit ting of water craft used in the section. TRIAL SET LUMBERTON, May 8. — A special venire of 50 men has been ordered to report at Robe son Superior court Thursday morning for the trial of Lizzie Turner, Negro woman, charged with the ice-pick slaying of Mack Williams, Fairmont Ne gro. MANY CALLS CHERRY POINT, May 8. — Telephone dial meters tally more than 700,000 phone calls here every month, reports Capt. W. R. Luck, telephone officer. Long distance wires, intercom phones transmit thousands of either conversations and the teletype machines rattle off in numerable lines of written communiques at this mammoth Marine air station. Before en tering the service, Captain Luck, who has just been pro moted to his present rank from that of first lieutenant, was with Western Electric in his ■ native state of Texas. For a time he served in Iceland then had two tours in the Pacific as a group communications officer. ASSISTANT AGENT NEW BERN, May 8. —Miss Carolina F. Jones, a former 4-H club girl of Jones county, will report hera June 15 as as sistant home oemonstration agent of Craven county. She will succeed Miss Jane Gibbs, who resigned after serving especially in food production and conservation during the war emergency. Miss Jones will graduate in June from Wo man’s college, Greensboro. NAMED COMMANDER CHERRY POINT, May 8. — Lt. Col. Elkin S. Dew has been named commanding officer of the outlying fields associated wifh the Marine air station at Cherry Point. After his gradua tion from Texas A & I, he en listed in the naval flight train ing program in June, 1939. Upon return from a tour of duty in the Virgin Islands and Cuba area, he was sent to the gunnery school near New Bern For some time he served as station gunnery officer at Cher ry Point. From there he went to the Marshall Islands and Okinawa. AIR MEDAL CHERRY POINT, May 8. — The air medal was presented here recently to Lt. Theodore McWilliams, USCG, comm/tid ing officer of the station’s air sea rescue task unit here, for meritorious achievement in re peated extensive flights for anti-submarine and convoy coverage duties over the North Atlantic during the winter of 1943-44. A native of Memphis, Tenn., he served three years in the army air corps, then enlisted as a regular in the coast guard. A graduate of the Pensacola flight school, he has been on duty here since last August. Senator Gets Leave To Attend Wedding WASHINGTON, May 8—(A>)— In the midst of Senate debate on the British loan Wednesday Senator Brooks (R.-Ill)., took the floor to ask a question. “I ask permission to be absent after voting on the McFarland amendment,” he said, “so I may attend my own wedding.” There were no objections. He was married in the afternoon to Mrs. Arthur J. Peavey, Jr., widowed daughter of the late Sena tor John Thomas of Idaho. DANCES SET FOR DESTROYER CREW Special Parties Planned For Men From USS John Weeks By USO Special invitations for Navy men coming here tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday aboard the USS John Weeks, have been extended through the offices of the Commanding Of ficer in Charleston, by the local USO club, Miss Doris Marsolais, assistant director of the Second and Orange club said. Special parties honoring the men during their three day visit in this port, have been planned and the 140 men and 21 officers of the large destroyer will be entertained ir “fitting style.” Arrangements Made Miss Marsolais said that arrange ments have been made whereby half of the watch can be entertain ed at a dance Friday night, the other half will be expected to at tend the regular dance on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon, members of the destroyer’s crew are schedul ed to take part in the regular Sun day afternoon activities at the club, and the special Mothers Day Home Hour. On the previous day, Saturday, the men may be invited to attend the club’s beach party, weather permitting, the officials said.
