(PHOTO BY PETE KNIGHT) AFE Leader Asks Unions To Back Friendly Solons I WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 .—(£>)— The AFL Wednesday asked its unions to form “non-partisan poli tical committees” to work for elec tion of congressmen friendly to labor. AFL President William Green suggested {he committees in let ters to AFL unions and state or ganiratons accompanying an AFL analysis of the voting records of indivdual members of the house and senate. Green also is sending additonal letters specifically indorsing or op posing many congressmen. The CIO has operated politcally through local CIO political action committees for some time.and has also issued a voting analysis of congressmen. However, the CIO has steered clear of endorsing or opposing candidates from national headquarters in favor of leaving that function to the local CIO-PAC committees. The AFL declined to make pub lic its separate analysis of each in cumbent in congress. The CIO is sued its compliation several weeks ago in a special supplement of its newspaper. However, Green urged in his letters that local AFL groups give the AFL voting lists “as wide publicity as possible.” "I respectfuly request you ex amine this (voting) record care fully,” Green wrote. “Give it as wide publicity as possible in the congressional district in which you are located. “Furthermore, I urge you to sup plement this action .by the selec tion of an nno-partisan political committee for the purpose of bring ing about the defeat of 1hose can Hching of Dry Eczema Why scratch and J suffer hopelessly? Many of the roll call votes cited in the 1945-46 session were the same’ as those used in the CIO complilation, such as labor control bills and OPA and housing legislation. The only foreign policy issue the AFL used was the British loan, which it favored. RECORD AIR RUN SOUGHT BY NAVY “Truculent Turtle” To Fly 9,000 Miles From Aus tralia To Seattle WASHINGTON, Sept. 18.—(JF)— The Navy plans a 9,000-mile flight —a long distance record—from Australia to the United States in a twin-engine flying boat, it was an nounced Wednesday. The “Truculent Turtle,” a Lock heed long range Navy P2V Nep tune, will take off “late this month” from Perth, Australia, and fly the great circle route to Seattle, the Navy said. It is expected to take 44 hours. The plane has been altered to carry an extra load of gasoline. Vice Adm. Arthur W. Radford, deputy chief of Naval operations, hinted the plane might go farther than 9,000 miles when he told a reporter that the destination of the plane was not fixed, although the flight will be directed to cross the West Coast near Seattle. “Complete latitude has been given to the pilot,” he said. "He can continue after he reaches the West Coast, just as he thinks best.” Endurance Test While describing the flight as a test of 4‘plane endurance and pilot fatigue” and disclaiming that it is primarily a long-distance record attempt, Admiral Radford conced ed that successful completion of the trip as far as Seattle would top the previous record flight of a little more than 8,000 miles made in an Army B-29 from Guam to Wash ington. The purpose of the flight, Rad ford added, is three-fold: To test methods of extending patrol planes’ ranges; to evaluate a new method of navigation; and to study crew endurance and fatigue on extended flights. The army has been waiting for good weather for several weeks to try to lift a B-29 over the north polar regions in a 10,000 mile flight from Hawaii to Cairo.
