SOUTHPORT, June 16 — New
York interests, seeking land lor
trucking, especially for the grow
ing of cabbage, lettuce and blue
berries, have been spending the
past week in Brunswick, they are
past week in Brunswick, they are
gathering data on weather, clim
ate and visiting various areas
where land of desirable types
may be found. So far nothing has
been said as to the extent of the
area they are in search of but
indirect information is to the ef
fect that they want quite a large
tract or .tracts.
Apart from this party another
party from New York has been
here and around Shallotte, search
ing especially for blueberry land.
For this crop a special type ol
soil, known as “Hard pan”, is re
quired. The hard pan, a reddish
sand subsoil is' credited with af
fording possibilities for irrigating
the blueberries in addition to mois
ture retaining features. There is ail'
abundance of this type of land in
Brunswick county and it is practi
cally useless for general farming
purposes.
