t w _:_— ■ —— HIDDEN FROM YANKEES Side Of Meat, 72 Years Old, Found Near Clinton Special to the Star CLINTON June 26—In Sampson eounty, where anything can hap pen and usually does-comes this ta'e of a side of meat hidden from Yankee marauders during the Civil War, and discovered recent ly in the ceiling of the old- home place of P. S. Cromartie, now liv ing at Roseboro. The meat, which is in relatively good condition, was found in the 200 year oid house iocated on the old Fayetteville-Wilmington stage coach road in Bladen county, about one mile from Hickory Grove school. The present occupants of the house, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Liles, In the process of installing electric wiring, discovered it between the ceiling’ of the first and second floors. The meat was wedged down between the joists, surround ed by oak leaves., The home was given to Mr. Cromartie by his father, F. L. The ceiling has noi been disturbed during his lifetime and this fact gives basis for the be lief that it has been there since about 1865, when the territory was covered thoroughly by the Yankee invaders. Mr. Cromartie does not recom mend the meat for eating. Even though in good physical shape with no evidence of worms, it appears as if it might be strong in taste. He would like to give it to a museum or collector, and asks that he be contacted in Roseboro, should anyone be interested. The piece of meat weighs be tween ten and fifteen pounds. JET MISSILES CAUSE ALARM AT BEACHES “Flying stovepipes”, jet-propel led missiles, were the flares which residents at Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches saw Wednesday night causing a rumor to be cir culated that a ship or plane was in trouble, it was reported yester day. The jet missiles, being tested at Camp Davis, were mistaken about 10:30 p. m. for flares about six miles north of Wrightsville. The Keltex Corporation at Camp Davis, disclosed that the “stove pipes” were fired as part of normal testing operations. Wednesday night’s tesls were the first to be made after dark, according to officials. The weapons, which reach speeds of 780 miles an hour, are set due north over a course away from the norma! shipping lanes. BODY OF NEGRO FOUND ON ACL UNDERPASS. The body of a Negro man. identified as Johnnie Johnson, about 45, was found Wednesday night on the Atlantic Coast Line underpass at Ninth street, it was reported yesterday. Coroner Gordon Doran said he was unable to ."'v whether the man had died of an accident or as a result of foul play. There was a hole in the man s skull w’hieh may have resulted from a hammer-blow’, Doran said. Kinsey Waters, Negro, found the body and notified police, it was reported. A date for an inquest has not been set, Doran added. Wedding Bells Ringing For New Hanover Folk, Rhodes’ Office Reveals Wedding bells in New Hanover county rang out in no uncertain terms in June, the proverbial [month for marriages. Up to late yesterday, 43 mar riage licenses had been issued this i month at the office of Adrian Rhodes, register of deeds. That number was well ahead of any month since last September. It equaled June a year ago. And there are three more days remain ing in this month in which pros pective brides and grooms may sign up. So it looks like this June is out to set some sort of a record. Labor Delegates Named To State Convention Wilmington delegates to the an nual Federation of Labor state convention scheduled for August have been named by the Central Labor Union. Place of meeting has not been announced. C. B Kornegay, president of the central group and L. H. Rouse have been ..elected delegates. J. O. Flowers and N. W. Hatcher are alternates to the gathering which is expected to attract more than 500 persons from throughout North Carolina. Officials at the Central Labor Union are negotiating for an in ternationally known labor leader as the principal speaker. In ad dition. government officials from Washington will speak. YOU With iuyar unralD you con aaain mIau _■ • PROPERTY DAMAGE NETS $50 FINE HERE Hit-And-Run Charged Fil ed Against Second Motorist One motorist \vas bound over to Superior court yesterday for fail ing to report an accident after an elderly man had been knocked un conscious on the street. A second motorist was fined $50 in Recorders court on a charge of drunken driving after witnesses testified his car ran through and damaged the Carolina Beach draw bridge gate. Youthful Eugene Dyson drew the fine Bridge Tenders G. Z. Holt and' D. W. Stewart testified that Dyson got out of the car follow ing the crash last May 31 as a bo'at was proceeding through the channel while the draw bridge was raised. Dvson denied he had been drink ing.' He said another youth, now in Massachusetts, was the per son who had been drinking. John Evans, 64. Negro oldest living employe of the Tidewater Power company, was the complain ing witness in the trial of An derson McCoy, JNegro. cnaigea with leaving the scene of the ac cident. Evans re mained unconscious in the hos pital for 24 hours. Tom Simpson, 26-year-old Negro, drew 30 days on the county farm as the result of assaulting Don Irving, another Negro, with an ice pick. Charles Jbhnson, Negro, who appeared in court bandaged about the head, received a 60 day sim ilar sentence. He was accused of arguing with another man’s wife resulting in a fight between the defendant and the woman. Judge Winfield Smith told Au gustus Durand and his wife, Negroes, to go home and see if they could learn to agree. The wife charged her husband with non-support but finally admitted she had left him after he had slapped her during an argumnt. Six-months suspended sentence was meted out to Emma Williams, who said she was a hostess. She and her husband left the court together. Tuesday she had been found guilty of false registration for immoral purposes. Police had testified that she and a marine were found in a local hotel room. The marine receiv ed a suspended sentence and was turned over to military police.
