Selected Industrials Join Rails In Forward Splurge Closing Hour Finds Favo rites Enjoying Gains Up To Three Points MARKETS AT A GLANCE NEW YORK, July 23—(IP)— Stocks — Higher; selected Industrials lead advance. Bonds — steady; rails im prove. Cotton — irregular; liqui dation, mill buying. CHICAGO Wheat — firm; CCC buying cash grain. Corn — firm: cool mid-west ern weather. Oats — firm; yields reported poor. Hogs — unevenly steady to 78 cents higher; top S27.25. Cattle — steady to 50 cents higtier; top $32.25. NEW YORK, July 23—(IP)—The stock market shook off some of it* lethargy today and, in the most active session of the past week, selectecf industrials and rails mov ed up fractions to around 3 points although exceptions were plentiful. Dealings turned lively in the forenoon as blocks of low-quoted issues running to 9,000 shares bus ied the ticker tape. Carriers came to the fore for a brief interval, then took a rest. Dealings tapered after midday and extreme gains were 'reduced in the majority of instances at the close. Transfers of 1,080,000 shares compared with Tuesday’s min.mum for the month ot 780.000 and were the largest since last Thursday. The Associated Press 60-Stock Composite was up .5 of a point at 67.6. widest advance since July 11. Industrials were up .9 and only .1 under their peak since last August. The market was the broadest since last Thursday Of 991 issues re gistering, 588 rose and 200 fell. Modest plus signs were retained by U. S. Steel, Youngstown Sheet, Chrysler. Goodyear, Montgomery Ward. Woolworth, International Harvester Douglas Aircraft, Amer ican Telephone, Anaconda, Ken necott, American Can, General Electric, Union Carbide. Wilson & Co., Pepsi-Cola. Standard Oil (NJ), Southern Pacific, Baltimore Sc Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio and Southern Railway. Bonds Steady Bonds steadied. At Chicago wheat ended down 1 3-4 to up 3-4 of a cent a bushel, corn off 1-4 to up 1 3-4 and deferred oats up 1-2 to 1 1-2. Cotton developed weak ness at the last and lost $2.35 to S2.75 a bale. Forward movers in The Curb were Colonial Sand, Coro Inc., Middle West Corp., Salt Dome Oil and Tampa Electric, the last named on a boosted dividend. Turnover here was 250,000, shares versus 230.000 yesterday. Some sailing was credited to news that Geneva Trade confer ence had rejected the U. S. type of agricultural export subsidy. This might force some change in the subsidy policy on cotton, traders feared. Cancellation of the U. S. relief program for Poland attract ed some attention on me. iheory that it might reduce that country's purchases of American cotton. Forecasts of showers in parts of Texas would be extremely bene ficial to the crop there. In the export field it was report ed that Holland recently purchased 25,000 bales of American cotton tor shipment in the fourth quarter of this year. Futures closed $2.35 to $2.75 a bale lower than the previous close. Feed grains showed wider g^ins than wheat. Wheat closed 1% lower to % higher, the July contract showing the loss and ending at $2.3814 $2.39%. Corn was % lower to 1 % higher, July $2.18-$2.19.
