nursing procram FOR COUNTY PUPILS County Health Department Plays Important Role in School Life by LILLIAN BAYLEY, R. N. Supervising Nurse New Hanover County Health Department The New Hanover County Health Department nursee participate in the school health program by as sisting in developing educational programs based on the needs of the pupils. The nurses assist the teachers in making health inspections of pupils: by teaching symptoms of communicable disease, the import ance of isolation and the value of immunization for babies and pre-school children: by helping to promote a healthful school en vironment. After the health inspection has been finished the public health nurse visits the family to encour age the correction of defects, to give or arrange for nursing care orf a sick pupil and to coordinate public health nursing activities with all other health organizations of the community. Each nurse has a district in the city or county and she is respon sible for all public health and school nursing within her district A schedule of nursing visits tc schools is arranged in September and each nurse makes her visits accordingly. The real evaluation of publjr health work accomplished in schools is not how many school or home visits were made but how satisfactory is the school health environment? How many physical defects were corrected? How many social and emotional problems were solved? and how many pu pils were immunized for whooping cough, diphtheria ann small po\ before they entered school? During i947 there were 978 pu pils who had dental correction* made, 121 tonsillutomies were done and 306 glasses were fitted. 'Hie public health nurses main objective in school nursing is to instruct teachers, parents, and pupils to recognize normal health and deviations from it and finally encourage each home in assuming its own responsibility for securing correction of defects and for main taining a healthy standard of liv ing. ^p37 Television Milestone The first television transmission over wire circuit, from Washing ton to New York City, and by radio from Whippany, N.
