S. PROMOTE TRADE Uranium Deposits Pro mote Congo Trade With U. S. By LEROY KELLER United Press Staff Correspondent LEOPOLDVILLE, Belgian Con go. (U.R)—The United States is num ber one customer today of the booming Belgian Congo, according to Deputy Governor General Leon Petillon. All of the uranium production of the rich Katanga district and about sixtq" per cent of the on go’s total production of cop per, tin, cobalt, tungsten, radium and palm nut oil move across the ocean to the United States. Like wise, Petillon added, more than half of all imports into the Congo come from the United Strtes. The United States achieved its present important position in the Congo economy during the war, when it started the uranium pur chases for the atomic bomb ex periment. Petillon said the govern ment hoped to restore Belgium to the top ■ place it held before the war. Uranium Hush-Hush uranium suu is a mgmy secret subject in this Central African col ony, although it is known that valuable deposits have been dis covered in Portuguese Angola, and, according to Prime Minister Jan Christain Smuts, there is plenty of it in South Africa. The present Prosperous Condi tion of the Congo was brought about in three stages, Petition said. Spread across the equator in the heart of Central Africa, and possessed of a 4,000-mile-long river that is navigable in long sections throughout the year, the Congo first achieved commercial importance as a source of rub ber and ivory. Before that the river was a highway for slave traffic. The second period, under King Leopold II, brought huge invest ments of capital into the colony tor the development of the mineral and diamond mines. Today, the Congo has passed to the third stage, which includes industrial and agriculture enter prises. The largest textile manu facturing company in Africa is lo cated here. Silk production is ex tensively cultivated. Butter, once brought all the way from New Zealand, now is flown in from the Lake Kivu plateau re gion via Sabena Belgian cargo planes. In the same planes are sent fresh vegetables grown in the temperate climate of the interior. Ivory, once a rich prize for the jungle adventure, has dwindled in importance to insignificance. There has been no elephant minting since the war, and what ittle ivory is available comes from the interior via the natives. Alcazar is the Spainish (Moor ish) name for castle. TRAFFIC IMPERILS 15-24 GROUP CHICAGO, —(U.fi)— The National Safety Council finds traffic acci dents more numerous in the 15 to 24 age group than in any other ex cept that of persons 65 and over. In its “Accident Facts,’’ an an nual statistical yearbook, the coun cil said there were 34 traffic deaths among persons 15 to 24 years old per 100,000, population in 1946. In the 25 to 44 age group, there were 22 deaths per 100,000, 25 in the 45 to 64 age group, 12 in the 5 to 14 class and 12 among children up to four years of age. Fifty deaths per 100,000 were recorded in the 65-year and older bracket. The high death rate among elder ly persons was attributed to the fact that many of them die of traffic injuries a younger person might survive, and also to the large number of pedestrians in that age group. Dean Of Cameramen Advocates Color NEW YORK, —(U.R)— Capt. Ed ward Steichen, dean of American ' photographers, believes that ulti mately all photography will be in color. Steichen, who had retired, re turned officially to his lenses re cently when he became director of the department of photography at the Museum of Modern Art. He said that while camera wiz ards are producing all kinds of gadgets, they have paid little at tention to the development of col or. He said he could not under stand why black and white pho tographers have neglected color. “When the sky resembles cur rant jelly it carries us away,” he said. “But a spectrum beauty isn’t always character. Look at the soft ness of those grays in the buildings across the street, the dull tone of that fire escape, the subtle hues of those curtains. “Catching these, and giving meaning to them—that would be camera art.” s Steichen said his first exhibition would be news photographs. “The great thing in photogra phy,” he said, “is to seize the in stant of reality and transfer it imaginatively into drama, laughter or some feeling that arouses emo tion..” YOUNG SOLDIER SELLS FRIENDS ON ARMY SANTA FE, N. M. (U.R)—If a sol dier can take a postman's holi day, that’s what Pvt. Albertino Casados is doing. Here on furlough from Fort Ord, Cal., 17-year-old Casados is n o t forgetting the postwar army for a minute. He hardly had time to see the hometown sights again be fore he ushered two friends to the army recruiting station to enlist. Two days later, he brought in two more. After they were signed up, the eager private told the com manding officer that two more of his buddies would be in later.
