BERLIN (U.R) — American kids in
Germany go to school just as they
would at home. The only big dif
ference is that they learn more
German.

ciated with teacher training work
at Michigan State College, s u na
med up his own year as superin
tendent of the Berlin Dependents’
School as “interesting, successful
but with room for improvement.”
Fifteen teachers handled 460
students during the year in class
es ranging from nursery school
through high school.
“German is tg»rfght in every
class” Boyne said.
French and Latin are the other
foreign languages taught.
The kids have a “howling” good
time every goin to and from
school. The irmy has supplied 17
large school buses which transport
children from every part of the
U. S. Sector of Berlin to the
school and then back home again.
Boyne said he is certain the
Berlin school will be accredited
by American schools, although
formal announcement of this has
not been received here yet.
One thing the kids lack is an
athletic field. They have no op
portunity for sports in the school,
but have access to many of the
military sport fields.
Keeping teachers is one of the
greatest problems for schools in
Germany. Most teachers stay only
a year. They are paid from non
appropriated funds with no assur
ance of a permcnent position.
Many come for travel and adven
ture—or to get married. Boyne
said Berlin is more fortunate than
most places in Germany. About
one-third of the teachers plan to
return to Berlin.

ably with the average small high
school in the United States. It is
, located in a large, modern build
ling which before the war was a
high school for 800 German girls.
“The teachers like it here,” he
said. "They like Berlin and the
teaching conditions. We have far
more applicants than we can han
dle. But in the American zone,
the teachers seem to be dissatis
fied.”
Eight students comprised the:
high school graduating class ofc
1947. Seven were from the Mid
West and one from New England.
Three plan to continue their
studies in European universities
next year. The others expect to
return home to enter college.
Teachers directly over the chil
dren said that the younger ones
seem to learn German as fast as
English. Most of them have Ger
man playmates. At a party re
cently, it was observed that the
hildren, Americans, spoke G e r
man while Bitting at a table eating
ice cream and cake.
Although there have been diffi
culties in getting througn this first
year, Boyne was optimistic about
future development. He said 'hat
to put the schools on a sound
basis in Germany it would be
necessary to put teachers on civil
service, or some other sound
basis, rather than to operate on a
day-to-day set-up as now.

were challenged by the citizens
of Munish and Frankfurt when
they continued to call Berlin the
capital of Germany since it was
partitioned into four occupation
zones, now have a comeback.
“So Berlin is recognized as the
capital city, at least when it
comes to paying bills,” said Der
Abend, the American-lisensed
Berlin newspaper. “Rudolph Hess
and the other Major Nazi crimi
nals now confined in Spandau
prison are going to cost the Ber
lin government 400,000 marks
($40,000) for the next year.

this with the remainder of Ger
many—perhaps also with Austria
which after all, sent us the ex
pensive Fuehrer Adolph Hitler who
was the father of our grief.”
