Commissioner Scott Urges
Farmers To Diversify Crops riALEIGH, Nov. 6— (AP—Cit mg the food and tobacco crisis as compelling reasons for a change over in North Carolina’s agricul tural economy, State Commission er of Agriculture W. Kerr Scott today urged farmers “from their own pocketbook angle’ to turn to more diversifed farming. ^here'&OnltfOM' Old ¥ die l/ou/h & 100 PROOF Liqueur Appearing on the citizens’ for um of the air, Scott covered a wide variety of subjects, ranging from the feed and lertilizer snort ages to the good health program and disclosure of a new federal state marketing agreement. The state agriculture chief predicted that Tar Heel growers would be faced with a $75,000,000 drop in tobacco income this year and should expect a further $100, 000,000 shrinkage in returns next year, due to new acreage reduc tions and lower prices. On the other hand, Scott fore saw the possibility of dollar a dozen eggs and $5 a bushel wheat Ijjj Always Ask For fl SALLY ANN BREAD «ii k b S FOX'S ROYAL RAKERY as a result of this years short grain crop. After noting that the grain shortage was the result of drought in the midwest and heavy grain shipments to Europe, the agricul ture commissioner asserted: “This year’s short grain crop will mean higher priced feeds, and that, in turn, means higher priced food. Higher priced food means that the price of food in gredients will continue to rise.” Asked to recommend a course of action to golden weed growers, Scott first advised farmers to help protect their export market by giving “wholehearted sup port” to the tobacco associates organization, and then observed: “We should this fall sew the largest grain crop and next spring plant the largest corn crop in the history of our state. Cer tainly, the largest portion of the land taken out of tobacco should go to corn and other feed crops. And there will also be some changeover to peanuts, potatoes and cotton.” Scott expressed the Delief that the average cut in tobacco acre age next year would be about 25 per cent. He predicted a five per cent increase in fertilizer supply, but said North Carolina farmers, who use one-eighth of the ferti lizer sold in the United States, would be forced to buy their fertilizer early due to limited storage facilities and heavy de mand. _ MODERN PAPOOSE — Bill Cook, Dartmouth College junior, carries his baby, Louis Thomas, on a papoose board, as he goes for a walk with his wife on the campus.
