BLADEN CAPITOL REVISES LAWS Mayor Fussell Says Ordi ances Cover AH Phases Of Government BLADENBORO, Dec. 6 — The town commissioners of Bladenboro have adopted an or dinance revising, consolidating, elaborating, and adding to the ordinances. The new ordinances cover every phase of city gov ernment including fire protec tion, and building regulations. These were urgently needed to decrease the high insurance rate. Mayor W. G. Fussell said. Passing "these ordinances is part of the program started some time ago to bring the insurance rates down. With the securing of the new fire truck and the passing of these ordinances the town is now ready for the in spection of the state Insurance rating bureau to determine whether or not the town gets a better classification. All the re quirements have been met and a better classification is expect-j ed. Mayor Fussll said. The town ordinances had not I been revised since 1913. Many old ordinances which were needed at that time are com pletely out of date now. By passing the new ordinances, all old ones were repealed. EARTH * j Dog Stowaway Returns Home Sets Precedent In Sailing ANOTHER INTERESTING ITEM A few years ago a rather in teresting true dog story ema nated from Liverpool, England. A man living a few miles out j side of Liverpool sold his pack of foxhounds to a friend in Ire land. The dogs arrived in Ire land and were soon kenneled in their new home. Evidently one of the hounds yearned for his old master and home in England for one day he appeared at the port where he had arrived from' England. A ship was leaving for Liverpool, and unnoticed in the crowd he slipped aboard it. On the ship's arrival in Liver pool, those about the docks noticed a hungry - looking dog saunter down the gangplank and lose himself in the crowd on the dock. A few days later his old master was greatly surprised to find him happily wagging his tail at the door. Hundreds of times dogs have traveled overland many miles to return to former homes, but this, to my knowledge, is the only incident where a dog took a boat to cover part of the dis tance. CHECK DOG’S PAWS If you ever ran barefoot dur ing Summertime when you were a child you will remember the sharp pain of walking over a field of fresh stubble, or of step ping on a sharp stone or a piece of glass. Your dog goes bare foot all the time. It is true that Nature provides him with pads, but still he doesn’t have thick leather soles, as we do, to pro tect him from pointed stones and glass. Every few days examine your pet’s four paws. Generally, you will find them in good condition but you may note occasionally that there is a crack in one pad ■— ■ .i— . ■ /T4/u«« £>£*?*** r• caused by having stepped on glass or some other piercing surface. There might be a thorn or even a tack in the pad. Check the calloused cushions and also inspect between the toes. It is surprising how easily a little pebble can become wedged be tween a dog’s toes, causing in flammation and possibly in fection if not removed. At first the animal may not show any sign of lameness from a pebble or thorn, and that is why it is advisable to look at the con dition of his feet regularly in or der to prevent infection from de veloping due to a cut or piece ; of foreign matter that might be | lodged in one of the pads or be tween the toes. * * DOG ASTROLOGER Do you know the exact date and hour of your dog's birth? Heart disease is sometimes discovered in your dogs, but nearly always it is a disease peculiar only to old dogs. The symptoms are pal pitation, rapid breathing and paroxysms of coughing; the dog tires easily when climbinb up stairs or refuses to climb them at all. A dog suffering with cardiac trouble should be under the care and direction of a vetrinarian. While the animal cannot be com pletely cured, if you follow au thorized medical instructions you will find that he will im sr vs* opufimb you get heat—quick, when your G-E boiler goes on! Every morning at 4 o’clock a drum is beaten at the local vil lage shrine. On hearing the drum, Yauchi’s three-year - old dog runs to the shrine and bows before it.
