tended by 300 ’teen-agers, drink
ing heavily and petting “in all
degrees of activity,” was report
ed today by two deputies who
said they were attacked by a
screaming mob of stud ots when
they tried to raid the orgy.
All the youths escaped, driv
ing “hot rods” wildly through
the streets of nearby Hr ' toon
Bay, but 25 license numbers
were obtained and county au
thorities were investigating sus
pected participants in the party.

probation officer, said, “it was no
orderly, innocent beach party
with adult chaperonage.”
“Hundreds of wine, beer and
liquor bottles were strewn over
the beach,” he said. “Plenty of
petting parties were going on in
the cars and on the beach in
all degrees of activity.”
Cowgill reported two of his
deputies - “disguised” themselves
in jeans and flannel shirts to
raid the huge beach orgy at
Dunes Beach, but when they at
tempted to arrest two youths,
other “teen-agers” freed the pris
oners and scattered in the dark.'
More than 50 cars, ranging
from “hot rods” to limousines,
fled from the beach at high
speed, many driving without
lights and swerving drunkenly
through the streets, the deputies
reported.
Cowgill said all suspected par
ticipants traced through automo
bile ownership would be held in
detention while the parents are
being questioned.
“The problem cannot be shift
ed on the overburdened juvenile
court or the Lchools,” he declar
ed. “It belongs squarely in the
laps of the parents. They should
know, within reason, where their
children are going, especially if
they have the family cars.
The state board of equalization
was asked to investigate the
source of intoxicants used by the
‘teen-agers.’
MOTOR COMMISSIONER
APPEALS FOR SAFETY
DURING YULE PERIOD
RALEIGH, Dec. 8—(£>)—Lan
don C. Rosser, state motor ve
hicles commissioner, today ap
pealed to motorists of the state
to take special care in their
driving during the Christmas
holiday period, and adopted as a
slogan “Don't let death take your
holiday.”
The Christmas period in the
past has been the most hazard
ous period of the year as heavier
traffic and the festive holiday
spirit is combined with winter
driving hazards of bad weather,
slippery highways and more
hours of darkness, Rosser said.
During December last year,
Rosser said 103 persons were kill
ed on streets and highways of
the state, 16 were killed between
Dec. 23 and 25, and 11 died on
Christmas day.
