678 "Look, Esther, how pretty she is," cried Bluma not heeding- her sister's wild grasp and hoarse cry, ''come home quickly." "No! No!" shrieked Bluma, "T want to be with the pretty princess." Then the miracle happened. The so-called "princess" came to the rescue. With truly royal gracious ness, she extended her hoop to Bluma and said in unmistakable language akin to her own: "Bitte, nehm das kleines Madchan und geh zu Hause." (The miracle could be explained by the German gov erness.) Bluma trotted home in a halo of glory. Henceforth she was a con secrated child, a princess among her kind. It was an incident that had more than the apparent superficial significance of good luck. Its repe tition enhanced that cfFect. For it was Bluma's first insight into a world so totally unlike her own—a world of beauty. It was there that a passion for things beautiful and a shrinking from the ugly things about her began to develop, and with un usual precociousness for a child N. W.
