THE MATINEE Olltb.
A Description of ttio Gorgeous Creatures
Win) Wornlilp Manly llcnuty
From the Xew York World.
Tho matinee girl, with regular reopen
ing of tho theatrical season, becomes a
distinct figure on tho streets again. With
the lorgnctto In n littlo plush bag. her
silver or cnamoled bonbonnicre (lilted
with littlo disks of jujubo pasto flavored
with violet), tucked securely Into tho
neat Jacket pocket, and nn air of Joyful
and enthusiastic expectancy on her
young and youthful countenance, she is
unmistakable; you couldn't by any posl
bihty bo deceived as to her destination.
For tho most part sho wears cowm of
clear gray camel's hair, madu with kilted
skirt, long, smooth draperies, and tho
trim bodice, concealed under a Jacket of
Heavy uussian-biuo cloth, finished oniy
with Mltchtng, and buttoned with big,
plain black buttons.
Her lmt is small nnd almost Ilka a
littlo enp in shape, nnd Is completely
covered with wldo bows, which Ho crisp
and close, nnd aro of gray-bine ribbon,
with lino red stripes. Her gloves mo
"Dent" gloves. That Is to say, thoy mo
of dogskin and linvo no buttons, being
closo wrlsti'd nnd heavily stitched with
tho satno color. Sho wears on her left
wrist a bracelet of leather, In which Is set
n tiny watch, or elso sho cairies ono of
the now French card cases of groy-bluu
morocco, with a watch as big as o 10
cent plcco set up In tho left-hand corner,
surrounded with heavy silver scrolling.
If sho doesn't carry a Dlrcctoiro um
brella, with a silver handle a yard long,
then sho has in that hand thrco or four
roses, "American beauties," ccnorally,
or sometimes Catherlno Mcrmet. That
Is the very latest "fad." Sho no longer
considers It correct to wear flowers In the
street, but It Is held to bo very "ah-h"
a9 tho Parisians say to carry roses, n
cluster of pinks or it knot of violets In
one's hand. When 3Irs. Chanler first
appeared in tho thcatro her she hired
three messenger boys to bring thrco largo
baskets of roses to her box, on tho plea
that sho required their perfume to onnulo
her to boar tho closo air of tho play
Since then every matinee gill finds
sho can't sit out tho "Lottery of Lovo"
without the aid of a handful of blossoms,
so tho Wednesday and Saturday houses
bloom Hko tho Vale of Cashmere, and
late-comers think thoy have strayed by
mistake Into a conservatory or n llowo'r
show when they first enter and find tho
warm, confined air heavy with tho scent
of hot-houso flowers.
CRIMES COMMITTED UY SERIES.
Another Carious Phenomenon Itevciiled
by Trench Criminal Statistic.
From tht Xtte Orltant Picayune.
Another curious phenomenon revealed
by French criminal statistics is that cer
tain classes of crimes occur by scries.
Wo had not long ngo a scries of mur
ders in which tho victims were cocottcs,
and Just now wo nro having a eorles of
old women murderers. There nro those
who say that each author of an original
crime produces a sort of hypnotism
among tho mass of criminals who ap
propriato and Imllato in his manner.
This strango influence exerted over tem
peraments which scorn to havo been yiro
dcstlncd to commit crimes has nothing
abnormal about it; Its workings have
been noticed in persons who wero per
fectly honest. A year or so ae;o a lady
was caught stealing In one of tho largo
stores; her honesty was abovo question,
and her means were amplo enough to
permit her to satisfy any caprice.
What sho had stolen wero littlo trifles
of no great value, nnd sho has declared
unit as she was looking at tho articles
nnd on tho point of speaking to tho sales
man wnoso oacK was tunica, to nst tucir
price, sho perceived n hnndsomoly
dressed lady standing alongsldo of her
who was hiding something under her
cloak. She was about to denounco the
thief whon tho latter fixed her eyes on
her In n, strango, half commanding, half
smiling way, and, completely fascinated,
she imitated her, followed hor about,
tnklug things whenever sho did. Pres
ently sho lost sight; of tho woman in the
crowd and at once camo to herself with
a start and was about to pay for the arti
cles sho had taken when sho was arrested,
In tho room w'uero she was searched shu
recognlod tho woman whom sho had
been imitating nnd who, liko her, had
been watchcu and arrested. I am ox
ceedlnnly skeptical on tho subject of
magnetism and hypnotism and tho other
tricks with which Jugglers aro no fond
of Imposing on tho public, but in a case
like (ho ono just cited, where tho lady's
past was Irrenroaolmblo and whero tho
theft committed was Insignificant, I nm
not iucliued to doubt hor assertion that
she was acting under nn influence sho
was powerless to resist. Her excusndld
not save her from prosecution, and sho
recoived a trifling sentence.
Iloiil the rir.it I'lnce In CJosMn.
From tht Xew York Hun.
"Tho public," said a well-known club man
In the Hoffman House, "must hnvo somo
woman to talk about. At present It seems to
bo mom or less rattled. Mrs. Cleveland has
disappeared from the gossip of tho newspa
pers, and Mrs. Harrison dues not scorn to
possess the requisite originality for newspaper
booming. In the dearth of other material It
would seem as though the public and the
press had settled upon Mrs. Amolfo Illvcs
Chaulcr for tho honor of being the most
widely discussed woman Iu America, but Mrs.
Chanler won't havo It, Her determination
not to bo tallica alout Is without doubt sin
scre. Of all tho women who have been
placed In tbo position that Mrs Cleveland
recently occupied lu public attention, .Mrs.
Langtry was the most complacent. She
lovLd to sco her name lu orlnt. as sho whs
constantly doing tho sort of tblugs that set the
world talking. Hence sho was a popular Idol
for nearly three years. That Is u long while
for any woman to bold the 11 rat place in tho
gossip of America."
