T'cpcvv of New York met Gcnoinl Grnnt nt illnncr nml hail a long conver sation with lilm, chlclly nbout llio Gen eral's relations with l'rclilont Andrew Johnson. It has just occurred to Mr. 3)epow to write up his recollections of this conversation In an open letter to Colonel P. D. Grant, which wnsyeter tin furnished to the press. There Is nothing in it that has not been said before by the ttaducciH of President Johnson, and it is ti little singular that n man of Mr. Dcpow'u re puted intelligence Bhould all at onco becomo inspired to contribute of his stock of misinformation to a new attack upon President Johnson's memory. The time and the occasion seem pecu liarly inappropriate for reviving charges which in tho estimation of those who best know Mr. Johnson never had any foundation in fact. That President Johnson had ambi tion is well known. That ho desired to expedite tho reunion of tho lately ill- vldcd family of States by somo quicker nnil better process than that of parti san reconstruction Is equally well un derstood. That ho, ever contemplated any scheme of self-aggrandizement nt tho expenso of tho honor of his country or entered into any conspiracy for such n restoration of political power to tho South as would practically nullify the settlements of the war Is too prepos terous to credit, in view of tho Presi dent's historic devotion to tho Union nnd great personul sacilflccs to Its maintenance. AVo fear that 3Ir. Dcpcw's recollec tion of tho conversation Is somewhat misty. It is not Impiobablo that tho conversation Itself wal moro or less muddled. Dependence- Is not always to be placed upon what Is said nt the comlvlal banqueting board between the slimy nnd champagne and other more potential beverages. OHIO IN A 1IAI) WAY. Is Ohio really degenerating? When she succeeded In having Mr. Hayes nominated for tho Presidency it became n popular saying that "Ohio is a great State." And when Ohio began to take in all the ofllces after Mr. Hayes was inaugurated It becamo a greater State. It succeeded in nominating tho lato President Garfield, nnd then It was tho greatest Stato of them nil. It got nltogcthcr too big, and becamo pos sessed of the Idea that it was the United States nnd Cincinnati was tho capital of tho confederation, It took on a largo nnd compact assortment of the " big head." Prom that tlmo dates Its degenorncy. Senator Sherman nnd tho Republican went a-woolng Copiah, Dauvlllo nnd tho bloody shirt generally. Tho Demo crats shelved Mr. Thurman, split nil to pieces on tho tariff, because of tho re duction of tho duty on wool, and fur ther divided themselves into "kids," led by John It. McLean nnd "moss hacks" of whom Senator Thurman vns supposed to bo tho typical repre sentative, though ho did not then take an actlvo pait In Stato politics. Then camo tho Cincinnati i lots. Tho people of that city wcro like tho Ilikaclo. They had not seen an execu tion for such a long tlmo that thoy peremptorily ordered sovoral to satisfy tho people of tho modern Tltlpu. Tho next thing was n much-mixed election, with threats of moro riots. And to crown it all an investigation shows that tho party managers out there, who hnvo always conshlcrod themselves the smartest of tho smart, linvo been caught in the bald-headed, palpable nnd silly trick of pulling moro votes In tho ballot-box than thcio wore voters registered. Was thoTc ever any thing moro stupidly ridiculous. ? Truly Ohio has fallen. If sho does not look out even Ithodo Island will bo turning up its little pug noso at her. Tii-itc is n difference between Dis trict Attorney Mnrtino of Now York and U. S. Ditstrict Attorney Dor shelmer as to tho prosecution of tho Civil and U. S. coses against Warner and Ward. Mr. Martlno claims that Jlr. Dorshcimcr did not consult with lilm beforo having Ward arrested, and that tho nrrcst will prevent AVarner from being U6ed as a U. S. witness iigninst Ward; nnd nil this with a view to letting Wnrd off. Mr. Dorshcimcr Tcpllcs thnt Mr. Martlno does not know tho elementary rules of law. Ho says that the only ground upon which Wnr ncr can rcf uso to testify is that ho would thereby crimlnnto himself. And Mr. Dorshcimcr intimates that Mr. Mar lino Is desirous of letting AVarner go free. Of tho lattor's arrest ho says: "Tho shot llrcd at AVarner from tho United States Attorneys ofllco has hit a great many birds In the tamo covert. Tho Timet wos winged. Tho Tribune and World wcro hit. Hut Mnrtino and .Mr, I. 31. Work were struck heavily." Hits. Ulla Wheeled AVir.cox is said to bo writing n book, In which sho will mercilessly lash nil thoso wicked nowspapcr men who have mndo fun of licr "fiery ycain" and other porsonal nnd poetical possessions. Sho will no doubt thoroughly vindicate herself and cover her trnduccrs with confusion. It is n eourco of great satisfaction to know that Tin: Ciutio has never spoktni of tho lady except in tho most serious and complimentary manner. AVo have ro- frnlnri1 oven from '" fr ,,,,r uw n .iiij't'ei, llio narci m iicurgeuivvii Heights, tho exclusive authorship of "I.nugh and tliu world lnuiffhft with You;" but have always said that It was the Joint production of herself and tho gallant Colonel. And Mrs. Wilcox knows this, Hut we would atlvtso eery olfeindvv pariiirrnplicr to Hon as a bird to the mounlnlns. Politics this year mo unusu'dly muddy. The Ohio cnmpnlgu wns con ducted on very stalo and old-time tac tics. In Virginia, personal abuse runs rampant. There has never been u more narrow-gaugo contest with Innu merable petty allegations against candi dates than that In Now York. And .Maryland, too, Is following the o.xaiu pies which have been set her. The regular nnd Independent Democrats nnd the Republicans nre Indulging In nil sorts of mean little abuo of one an other. In a ppcech at Kastnn Inst night Gtneral llradley T. Johnson called Senator Gortunn "thcMnhouo of Mary land." A itVTtir.it novel bridal party nrrlved nt llaltlmoro jrsterday. They wero Mr. nnd Mrs. Hugh J. McUlrncy of Chicago, nnd they camo on tho yacht AVhite Wing, which they chartered for nn Indefinite time in New York They will mnko n tour of the Southern sea board cities and also Ilt tho West In dies. Tho cicwof tho yacht consists of tho captain and six men, tho bride nnd groom being the only passengers. The expenses of tho trip will bo nbout $.10 n doy, almost as costly as a visit to Niagara or Saratoga nt tho height of the Hason. As an interrogatory pertinent to this old subject newly presented, wo sub mit the following from tho New York IkraUl of this morning : "Among the disclosures thnt aio to come, wo await with special Interest n sulllcicnt expla nation why tho treasonable propositions of President Johnson, which General Grant related to Mr. Depew and which Colonel Grant certifies that ho has let ters nnd documents to nttcst, wcro omitted from tho articles of Impeach ment presented ngntust tho President by tho House of Representatives iu 1SC8." Tiir.nr. is a good deal of talk in tho pi ess nbout tho "superfluous young womon," because iu some States there nremorcof her than of tho young man. AVe do not ngrec to the uso of tho word superfluous in this connection. I here could bo no such thing as a superfluity of young ladles, especially In tills com munity. As between tho superfluous young man and tho "superfluous" joung woman, give us the latter seven dnvs of tho week. Tun New York Republicans nto counting n good deal on n forthcoming surpilso In their fnvor which, it is un derstood, is soon to cmannto from Mr. Conkllng. Tho latter is supposed to have settled all his old political ac counts, nnd to be onco moio in lino with his paity. Y'ct wo know of no mathematical rule by which a Conkllng surprise can bo accurately measured In advance. Tin: social pcason in Texas has been inaugurated with great eclut. There was n ball in Hallitsvllle, in thnt State, n few clays ago, nnd two young men hnd a little disagreement. Tho hip pocket wns called In as an umpire, and the dance went on with n fireworks ac companiment. AVhen tho smoko had cleared away It was found that onoman had been killed and one fatally and two blightly wounded. AVnr.N wi: read about the millions upon millions of letters delivered nnd collected by tho letter-carriers during the past )ear, the wonder glows how this country ever managed to get along without these useful nttaches of tho postal pcrvice. It is very ccitaln that wo bhall never bo nblo to do without them In the future nnd thoy descive moreovci to be libernlly paid for their work. Tun American Street-Railway Asso ciation will hold its fourth lcgular meeting In St. Louis to-day and a largo representation of this important inter est is expected. Tho stilklug inllway employes of St. Louis will doubtless nvnll themselves of this excellent op portunity of presenting their grievances beforo a full court. Tun Columbus Dispatch bays that Senator Sherman "does not proposo to bo outflanked in his Piosidcntlal move nicnts by nny young man from Clncm natl, and will therofoio follow Judge Porukcr to New Yoik." AVo have had fiequtnt occasion to notlco that Mr. Shcrmnn's bend novcr gets much out of level. It ir iiKroirrisn from Rangoon that KingThcebaw said tho other day to his Generals that ho would personally lead his tioops against tho English nimy. It is moro likely that when Thcebaw gets sober he will content himself by beheading fifty or n huudrcd moro of his near lelativcs. S.vis tho Washington correspondent of tho Cincinnati Enquirer: "I dropped In tho United States Supremo Court room a fow dajsago. Tho habits of tho Justices pend ing an argument arc striking. Tor Instance, Hratllcy listens for a fuw minutes and then falls asleep. Ills reveries nro checked wheu tho court adjourns. Miller sometimes closes his ejes, but not to sleep.
