Correspondent at the United Nations) UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.— For the first time, the real story behind the most dra matic series of events involv ing the United Nations was revealed here today exclusive ly to this correspondent. Out of U.N. archives never before seen by any man—and never seen since, except in these dis patches comes the tale of the Maccabees and their struggle against Genocide. • • • MODIN, JUDEA, Kislev 24, 160 B.C.E. (JTA) Jews in this village are resisting the orders of King Antiochus IV. Details are still lacking, but it was ascertained on the highest authority that a priest has murdered a Syrian captain, and has called on the population of Modin to join him in battle. The priest’s name is said to be Mattathias, an energetic Hasmonean. A local psychiatrist told this correspondent that old Matta thias probably suffers from a suicide complex. • • • SOMEWHERE IN THE JUDEAN HILLS, (JTA) Your correspondent has reached the select hide-out of the Hasmoneans. They mean business. Armed with spears and pruning hooks, the rebels emerge from their lair every night, attack the Syrian posi tions, and retreat at dawn. Resistance groups and guer rilla units are being organized throughout the district. Mat tathias has established a Gov ernment-in-E xil e, and has named one of his sons, Judah, as Ambassador to the United Nations. • • • ROME, Special to JTA Judah the Hasmonean arrived here this week, and has placed a formal complaint against Syria before the United Na tions. Judea is accusing Syria of practicing Genocide. The Security Council has been in session for 48 hours. Rome has exercised its veto, and the Judean draft resolution has been shelved. Secretary Gen eral Day the Hammerslinger announced after the Council adjourned that he is leaving for Judea to establish a U.N. presence. • • • MODIN, JUDEA (JTA) Day Hammerslinger appealed to both sides in the Judea-Syr ian strife today to lay down their arms and listen to rea son. The Syrians promptly at tacked the Hasmoneans. War rages throughout Judea. Hammerslinger told the JTA exclusively today: “There is no doubt whatever in my mind: “A will to peace exists.” Four battalions of Syrians are missing. • • • SOMEWHERE IN TH E JUDEA HILLS, (JTA) Old Mattathias died today. One of his sons, Judah, has been elected as Colonel of the Ju dean guerrilla forces. He has grown a black beard. Victory after victory is being reported by the Judean rebels. There is no doubt that the Judeans are employing a secret weapon. |||||||||I|||||||||||!IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!IIIIIIIIIII1IIIIIIIIII!IIM Chanukah Fete Is Symbol For Religious Freedom The eight-day holiday or Chanukah, the Jewish festival that has symbolized the fight for religious freedom through out the ages, begins at sunset today. Chanukah, as chronicled in the Book of the Maccabees, recites the struggle between Jewish freedom fighters and the Syrian King Antiochus in - the Holy Land two millennia ago. The despotic ruler at tempted to force paganism < upon the Jews, who rose up to resist under the leadership : of Judah Maccabaeus. In the year 165 8.C.E., Judah Mac cabaeus and his band recap tured the Temple at Jerusa lem, cleansed it, rededicated it, and proclaimed an eight day “dedication of the altar.” Jews have commemorated the holiday annually ever since. Candles are kindled every night of the holiday, begin ning with one on the first night, two on the second, un iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiii Grandma Golda Mattathias, widow of the late leader, is said to be in charge of the secret-weapon arsenal. Col. Judah today gave his rebel movement a new name. Here after they will be known as Maccabeans. Since the word "maabi” means hammer, Col. Judah is being criticized for taking a name similar to that of the U.N. Chief. But he sticks to his secret weapon. • • • MODIN, JUDEA, (JTA) 24 Kislev 5720 til finally eight candles blazed in the special Hanukah men orah or candelabrum. The hol iday is celebrated with special services, prayers and hymns, in synagogues, homes and re ligious schools. Chanukah is known as the “Festival of Lights” and also as the “Days of Dedication.” Its universal theme the fight for religious freedom — has echoes in human history, particularly in the civilization of the western world, and is as meaningful today as it was in the times of Judah Macca baeus. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII The entire district has been cleared of Syrians, and Col. Judah has established the headquarters of the Govern ment-in-Exile here. It is possi ble now to reveal the nature of the Judean secret weapon. It is something called latkes, fried in oil brought here from the Temple in Jerusalem. It looks as if the Jews are win ning the war. • • • JERUSALEM, Kislev 24, 8.C.E., (JTA) The Macca beans have re-entered the Holy City. They have re-taken the Temple, and have begun renovations. There is a scan dal brewing behind the scenes. The Temple is short of oil all of it having been used up for the manufacture of that secret latkes weapon. It has been ascertained authorita tively that 20 regiments of Syrians were fed the latkes, whereupon they went to sleep, while Col. Judah’s troops at tacked them with hammers. • • • JERUSALEM, Kislev 31, (JTA) A miracle has oc curred. It has developed that some of the oil-soaked latkes, right out of Golda’s deep freeze, yielded enough oil to keep the Temple lights going. Impeachment proceedings that have been threatened against Grandma Golda have been dropped. Jews are danc ing in the streets, celebrating their liberation. Judah has been proclaimed King. • • • ROME, Special to JTA Day Hammerslinger returned to U.N. headquarters today. He has issued a communique declaring that a great victory has been achieved by the Unit ed Nations presence in Judea. “I see a will to peace” he stated. Dispatches from Da mascus report that the new Syrian King Alexander Jan naeus, is receiving fresh arms and training new troops. Col. Judah* is doing the same. • • • UNITED NATIONS, N Y..
